  • Drew Smyly Exercised Player Option

    Headshot for Drew Smyly

Left-hander Drew Smyly exercised his player option to return to the Cubs, tweets Jesse Rogers of ESPN. He’ll make an $8.5MM salary next season and is guaranteed a $2.5MM buyout on a mutual option for 2025. There wasn’t much suspense with the decision. Smyly wasn’t going to beat $11MM in guarantees on the open market. The…

  • Drew Smyly Returning To Cubs Next Season

    Headshot for Drew Smyly

Chicago Cubs left-hander Drew Smyly exercised his $8.5 million player option for the 2024 season on Monday. Smyly was a swingman for the Cubs in his second year in Chicago in 2023, making 41 total appearances (23 starts). The 34-year-old veteran southpaw wasn't very effective, though, going 11-11 with a 5.00 ERA (4.96 FIP) and 1.43 WHIP with 56 walks and 141 strikeouts in his 142 1/3 innings pitched. He was much more effective in a relief role, as he had a 2.51 ERA and 12.2 strikeouts per nine innings in 28 2/3 innings out of the bullpen compared to a 5.62 ERA and 8.1 K/9 in 113 2/3 innings as a starter. Smyly is going to have to be better in a starting role in spring training next year if he wants to win a rotation spot for the Cubbies to begin the 2024 regular season.

  • Cubs, Kyle Hendricks Have Reportedly Discussed Extension

    Headshot for Javier Assad

One of the Cubs’ first decisions of the upcoming offseason is whether to exercise an option on the team’s longest-tenured player. Chicago holds a $16MM option on Kyle Hendricks that comes with a $1.5MM buyout. At the very least, the team is likely to retain the right-hander on that net $14.5MM decision. Bruce Levine of…

Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer met with reporters on Tuesday (including Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune) to discuss his team’s disappointing finish to the 2o23 season and his plans for the upcoming offseason. Topics of interest included the team missing the playoffs, Kyle Hendricks’ and Cody Bellinger’s futures in Chicago, and manager…

  • Justin Steele No Longer Starting On Sunday

    Headshot for Drew Smyly

Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Justin Steele will no longer start on Sunday against the Brewers, per beat writer Meghan Montemurro. Due to the fact that the Cubs were eliminated from postseason contention on Saturday, Chicago will no longer need the services of their ace. Instead, it'll be veteran Drew Smyly taking the ball against Milwaukee. Smyly will likely work as an opener in this contest, which limits his DFS value. Steele, who ended up putting together an excellent season on the North Side, will finish with a 16-5 record, 3.06 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, and 176:36 K/BB ratio over 173 1/3 innings (30 starts)

  • Previewing The 2023-24 Free Agent Class: Starting Pitcher

    Headshot for A.J. Alexy

We've been covering the upcoming free agent class at MLBTR, going through each of the non-pitching positions. But now it’s time to take the mound, beginning with the starters. Though it can be debated whether there’s a true ace in the mix, there’s plenty of arms here that would upgrade the rotation of any team.…
