  • Brandon Belt Working Toward Return

    Headshot for Brandon Belt

First baseman/designated hitter Brandon Belt (back) traveled with the Toronto Blue Jays to Tropicana Field for their series against the Tampa Bay Rays and was set to hit off a machine on Friday. The next step for the veteran slugger could be to face live pitching, barring any setbacks, at the team's complex in Florida. Belt appears to be inching closer to a return from lumbar spine muscle spasms, which forced him to the injured list early last week. The 35-year-old has been encumbered by back issues throughout the second half of the year. Belt has proven to be a nice pickup for the Jays this season, slashing a solid .251/.369/.470 with 16 home runs, 22 doubles, and 38 RBI in 382 plate appearances.

With the regular season winding down, a number of teams (and their fanbases) are already starting to turn their attention towards the offseason. • Brandon Belt Leaves Early With Back Spasms

    Headshot for Brandon Belt

Toronto Blue Jays first baseman/designated hitter Brandon Belt (back) left Monday's game early against the Texas Rangers due to lower-back muscle spasms. Before he left, Belt went 0-for-2 with two strikeouts to drop his season average to .251 and his OPS to .839 on the year. He was replaced as the designated hitter by rookie Spencer Horwitz. The 35-year-old Belt has been dealing with some back issues in the second half of the season, and this is certainly something that could send the veteran left-handed hitter to the injured list for most, if not all, of the 2023 regular season. Belt entered Monday's game hitting .252/.371/.473 with an .844 OPS, 16 home runs, 38 RBI and 50 runs scored in 317 at-bats in his first year in Toronto.

  • Brandon Belt Remains Out Of Sunday's Lineup

    Headshot for Brandon Belt

Toronto Blue Jays first baseman/designated hitter Brandon Belt (illness) remains out of Sunday's lineup versus the Kansas City Royals. The 35-year-old hasn't been seen in action since last Sunday due first to a back problem and now a stomach virus. Belt's next opportunity to return arrives on Monday for Game 1 of a four-game set with the Texas Rangers. The one-time All-Star is slashing a dependable .252/.371/.473 with 16 home runs, 22 doubles, and 38 RBI in 380 plate appearances, so he's been relevant in AL-only leagues.

  • Brandon Belt Out Against A's

    Headshot for Brandon Belt

Toronto Blue Jays first baseman/designated hitter Brandon Belt (back) is not playing on Monday against the Oakland Athletics. It will be Belt's third straight missed game due to a back injury that continues to bother him of late. In his absence, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is serving as the designated hitter and is batting third, while rookie Spencer Horwitz is playing first base and hitting cleanup for Toronto against A's rookie right-hander Luis Medina. Fantasy managers shouldn't be surprised if Belt eventually lands on the injured list if he cannot return soon. The 35-year-old is having a decent first year in Toronto and he's coming off a strong month of August in which he hit .284 (21-for-74) with seven home runs, four doubles, 11 RBI and 17 runs scored in 21 games (20 starts).

  • Brandon Belt Returns To DH Role

    Headshot for Brandon Belt

Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Brandon Belt (back) has returned to the team's starting lineup against right-hander Chris Flexen and the Colorado Rockies, serving as the designated hitter and batting cleanup. Back issues kept Belt out of the last two games, but it wasn't a serious issue and he's now available for the start of a series against the Rockies at Coors Field. The 35-year-old left-handed slugger has good history in his career at hitter-friendly Coors Field during his time with the San Francisco Giants, and he's had a pretty solid first year in Toronto. Belt has hit .250 (78-for-312) with 15 home runs, 37 RBI and 47 runs scored in 312 at-bats. He's also coming off a strong month of August, going 21-for-74 (.284) with seven round-trippers, four doubles, 11 RBI and 17 runs scored in 21 games (20 starts).

  • Brandon Belt Unavailable Due To Back Spasms

    Headshot for Brandon Belt

Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider said that first baseman/designated hitter Brandon Belt (back) "wasn't available" for Tuesday's game against the Washington Nationals after dealing with lower-back spasms. Belt wasn't going to start against a left-handed pitcher on Tuesday anyway, but he wasn't available at all off the bench either due to the injury. There's a pretty good chance he won't be available to play on Wednesday as well, but fantasy managers will want to check back later. In his first year in Toronto in 2023, the 35-year-old veteran left-handed hitter has mostly been a part-time bat for the Jays against right-handed pitching. Belt has been decent with a .250/.369/.465 slash line with an .834 OPS, 15 home runs, 37 RBI and 47 runs scored in his 374 plate appearances. Given his injury history, don't be surprised if he needs a stint on the injured list.

  • Brandon Belt Sitting Against Southpaw

    Headshot for Brandon Belt

Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Brandon Belt is retreating to the bench on Saturday with the Cleveland Guardians starting left-hander Logan Allen. Bo Bichette is getting a day off his feet and will serve as the designated hitter and bat in the two-hole, while Santiago Espinal is starting at shortstop and batting eighth against Allen. It's not a surprise that Belt is on the bench despite his recent hot streak at the plate. The 35-year-old veteran left-handed slugger has just 22 plate appearances against lefties all year and has hit four of his 19 home runs against them. Belt is having a decent season in his first year in Toronto and has gone 6-for-21 in his last six games with four home runs, six RBI and four runs scored.

  • Brandon Belt Homers Again In Losing Effort

    Headshot for Brandon Belt

Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Brandon Belt went 1-for-3 with a solo home run, a walk and a strikeout in the team's 5-3 loss to the division-rival Baltimore Orioles on Thursday. Belt now has four home runs in his last four games to bring his season total to 15 through 301 at-bats in his first year in Toronto. In the month of August he's been on a tear, going 20-for-63 (.318) with seven long balls, four doubles, 11 RBI and 16 runs scored in 18 games (17 starts). Fantasy managers are going to want to keep the 35-year-old in their starting lineups while he continues to swing a hot bat. Overall in 2023, he's slashing .256/.372/.478 with an .851 OPS, 37 RBI and 46 runs scored in 91 games played.

  • Brandon Belt Sitting Against Left-Hander

    Headshot for Brandon Belt

Toronto Blue Jays first baseman/designated hitter Brandon Belt will retreat to the bench on Friday with the team facing a left-hander. Alejandro Kirk will serve as the designated hitter and will bat fifth against Boston Red Sox left-hander James Paxton. Danny Jansen is behind the plate for Toronto and is batting cleanup. The 35-year-old Belt has seen just 26 plate appearances in his first year in Toronto against southpaws, and he's gone 4-for-22 against them with zero home runs, two RBI and 10 strikeouts against them. Belt will pretty much only be in Toronto's lineup when they are facing righties. He's offered very modest counting stats for fantasy managers this year, hitting .246 (61-for-248) with nine homers, 27 RBI and 33 runs scored.
