  • Blue Jays Notes: Stripling, Jansen, Kirk, Tiedemann

Ross Stripling played two and a half campaigns in Toronto after being acquired from the Dodgers in a 2020 deadline trade. The right-hander had a quality second full season as a Blue Jay, throwing 134 1/3 innings of 3.01 ERA ball over 32 outings (24 starts) last year. It was a well-timed return to his…

  • Brandon Belt Making Spring Debut As DH

Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Brandon Belt (knee) is making his Grapefruit League debut on Saturday against the Baltimore Orioles and right-hander Austin Voth, serving as the designated hitter while batting third in the lineup. Belt has been delayed in camp this spring after having surgery on his right knee last September. He limped to a .213/.326/.350 slash line with a career-low .676 OPS, eight home runs, 23 RBI and 25 runs scored in only 298 plate appearances and 78 games in his 12th season with the San Francisco Giants last year. Hopefully the 34-year-old left-handed hitter can stay healthier as the primary DH for Toronto in 2023 against right-handed pitching. Fantasy managers shouldn't be too optimistic on Belt at this point in his career, but he's worth a late-round flier in a much more hitter-friendly park and in a better lineup.

  • Brandon Belt Takes Live Swings On Friday

Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Brandon Belt (knee) was able to take live batting practice on Friday. This is just one step closer for Belt to get back into game action. The organization is hopeful that Belt can make his Grapefruit league debut at some point this upcoming week. The 34-year-old has been brought along slowly after undergoing knee surgery in September. The expectation is that Belt is going to be ready to play in time for Opening Day.

  • Brandon Belt A Week Away From Spring Debut

Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Brandon Belt (knee) is a week away from making his spring training debut. Belt underwent season-ending knee surgery last September and is hoping to put together a healthy 2023 season. The 34-year-old was one of the offseason additions for the Blue Jays and signed to a one-year, $9.3 million deal. Belt spent the past 12 seasons with the San Francisco Giants and will be swapping jerseys for the first time in his career. He slashed .213/.326/.350 across just 298 plate appearances in 2022. He posted a .676 OPS along with a 27.2% strikeout rate and a 12.4% walk rate. Aside from his season-ending surgery, Belt suffered several other setbacks throughout the season. The Blue Jays are hoping to get Belt back on track as his age-35 season approaches.

  • Brandon Belt To Be Eased In At Spring Training

Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Brandon Belt (knee) has played in seven spring training games in the last two years while managing a knee issue. The Blue Jays and the 34-year-old agreed to a plan to ease him into camp this year as a precautionary measure after he had knee surgery last September. Belt said he's feeling the "best I've felt in a couple years," but he's still going to take it slow. He hasn't joined the rest of the players in on-field workouts, but he's been hitting, taking groundballs and doing his own running. Belt struggled to produce last year with the San Francisco Giants while playing through his knee injury, slashing .213/.326/.350 in 78 games. Toronto plans to use him primarily as a designated hitter while putting him at first when Vladimir Guerrero Jr. needs a day off. Serving mostly as a DH should help with his health, but most fantasy managers probably aren't expecting much from Belt as he nears the end of his career.

  • Brandon Belt, Blue Jays Reportedly Agree To One-Year Deal

The Toronto Blue Jays and free agent first baseman Brandon Belt reportedly agreed to a one-year, $9.3 million deal Monday, per the Athletic's Kaitlyn McGrath. The agreement has yet to be made official. In his 12-year career with the San Francisco Giants, Belt slashed a respectable .261/.356/.458. However, he only managed a .213/.326/.350 slash line with eight home runs and 23 RBI in 298 plate appearances as he dealt with a right knee injury. The 34-year-old will add a left-handed bat to a strong Blue Jays lineup and will offer depth at first base and designated hitter. The lineup switch is an upgrade for Belt, making him worth a late-round flyer despite his injury concerns.
