  • Max Scherzer Eyeing "Early May" Return

    Headshot for Max Scherzer

Texas Rangers right-hander Max Scherzer (back) could now be ready in early May despite initial evaluations placing his likely return around June or July, and his first minor-league rehab start could potentially come as early as next week. Scherzer threw 25 pitches of live batting practice at Comerica Park on Monday and said the next step is throwing 40 pitches on Friday. The 39-year-old future Hall of Famer had surgery to fix a herniated disc in his back on Dec. 15. General manager Chris Young said Scherzer attempted several "conservative treatments in pain management," including an epidural, but the pain never went away, which is why he had offseason surgery. Scherzer probably isn't going to be a fantasy ace any more, but he's still plenty capable of delivering a dominant outing every now and then if he can remain healthy after he returns from his back injury.

Max Scherzer said he didn't experience continuing nerve pain after back surgery, which the Rangers right-hander had been told was fairly common for his procedure.

  • Max Scherzer Throws Bullpen Session

    Headshot for Max Scherzer

Texas Rangers starting pitcher Max Scherzer (back) threw a bullpen session without any issues on Tuesday. The plan is for Scherzer to progress to facing live hitters in a batting practice session next week. The 39-year-old remains without a timetable to return, but the expectation is that Scherzer is back before the start of June. That being said, Scherzer is worth stashing in deeper mixed leagues while he continues to make progress in his recovery from back surgery.

  • Max Scherzer Making Solid Progress

    Headshot for Max Scherzer

Texas Rangers starting pitcher Max Scherzer (back) continues making progress from his offseason back surgery and was able to play catch on Wednesday. The veteran right-hander won't be ready for Opening Day, but might not miss too much time. Rangers manager Chris Young doesn't believe that Scherzer will need to be placed on the 60-day injured list. Instead, Young suggested that Scherzer could be back as early as May. The Rangers are likely going to be cautious with the 39-year-old. His injury might push him back into the later rounds of fantasy drafts.

  • Max Scherzer Cleared For Baseball Activities

    Headshot for Max Scherzer

Texas Rangers right-hander Max Scherzer (back), who had surgery on Dec. 15 on his back for a herniated disc that shut him down late last season, has been cleared for baseball activities around the 13-week mark since surgery. June remains the target date for the Rangers, although Scherzer doesn't fully see it that way. In eight starts for Texas in 2023 after being traded from the Mets, he went 4-2 with a 3.20 ERA, but he missed the final six weeks of the regular season due to a muscle strain in his right shoulder. The 39-year-old future Hall of Famer isn't targeting any specific date to make his 2024 debut, and the reality is he could miss all of the first half of the season. Scherzer can still contribute in fantasy when he's healthy, but the fact that he could miss the first half drastically reduces his fantasy value in upcoming drafts.

  • Max Scherzer Could Return In June

    Headshot for Max Scherzer

Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said the team is looking at "June" for right-hander Max Scherzer (back) to return in 2024. He underwent surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back in mid-December. Scherzer initially had a timeline to return around the All-Star break, but the veteran will continue rehab and could potentially come back in June. "With Max, we are now looking at June. That's a little bit earlier than we thought," said Bochy. The 39-year-old owned a 3.77 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and a 174:45 K: BB across 152 2/3 innings in 2023. With the latest news, Scherzer could see a bump in his NFBC ADP of 319 and is worth stashing in all fantasy leagues.

  • Rangers Hope Max Scherzer Can Return In June

    Headshot for Max Scherzer

The Texas Rangers are hoping to get right-hander Max Scherzer (back) back from his injury in June. "With Max, we are now looking at June. That's a little bit earlier than we thought," manager Bruce Bochy said. Scherzer is around three weeks away from resuming workouts six weeks after having surgery to fix a herniated disc in his back. The 39-year-old future Hall of Famer is hoping to make his 2024 season debut in June or July, barring any setbacks with his rehab. Not only was Scherzer injured last year, but he had trouble keeping the ball in the yard and is starting to look less dominant as he approaches 40 years old. The three-time Cy Young winner is only going to pitch around half a season in 2024, too, so fantasy managers shouldn't be expecting much out of him in his first full season in Texas.

  • Max Scherzer To Resume Workouts In Several Weeks

    Headshot for Max Scherzer

Texas Rangers right-hander Max Scherzer (back) said he should resume working out again in around three weeks. He has cleared the critical six-week mark after having back surgery without any setbacks. The 39-year-old future Hall of Famer had surgery six weeks ago to fix a herniated disc in his back. Scherzer still has a ways to go and is hoping to make his 2024 season debut around June or July, which will obviously limit his fantasy appeal in spring drafts. He was as inconsistent as ever for his fantasy managers in 2023, going a combined 13-6 with a 3.77 ERA (4.32 FIP) and 1.12 WHIP with 45 walks and 174 strikeouts in 152 2/3 innings (27 starts) for the Rangers and New York Mets. Scherzer's stock has fallen considerably heading into his age-40 season, and his inability to keep the ball in the park last year was also concerning.
