  • Offseason In Review: Minnesota Twins

    Headshot for Jay Jackson

The Twins idled their way through much of the offseason as the front office navigated payroll limitations before eventually making a characteristic late strike on the trade market. Major League Contracts Carlos Santana, 1B: One year, $5.25MM Jay Jackson, RHP: One year, $1.5MM (includes buyout of 2025 club option) Josh Staumont, RHP: One year, $950K...

  • Twins Notes: Kirilloff, Santana, Buxton

    Headshot for Byron Buxton

Not long after the Jorge Polanco trade cleared room in the Twins’ budget, the front office added Carlos Santana on a $5.25MM free agent pact. The veteran offers an alternative at first base to Alex Kirilloff, who started 58 games there a year ago. Minnesota has stopped short of declaring either player the starting first baseman. However,…

  • Twins Make Flurry Of Roster Moves Wednesday

    Headshot for Jordan Balazovic

The Minnesota Twins made several roster moves on Wednesday afternoon. The club designated right-handers Jordan Balazovic and Daniel Duarte, as well as outfielder Bubba Thompson for assignment. The moves were made in order to clear roster space for the recently signed Carlos Santana and Jay Jackson while the Twins also claimed right-hander Zack Weiss off waivers from the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday. Balazovic, 25, posted a 4.44 ERA in 18 games with the Twins in 2023 and was expected to compete for a bullpen spot in 2024. The club recently claimed both Duarte and Thompson off waivers but their stays in the Twin Cities will be short-lived. The 31-year-old Weiss tossed a solid 3.21 ERA between the Angels and Red Sox in 2023 but also tossed a 6.03 ERA across 30 appearances with Triple-A Salt Lake in the Angels organization.

  • Twins To Sign Carlos Santana

    Headshot for Carlos Santana

The Twins are reportedly in agreement with Carlos Santana on a one-year contract. The veteran first baseman, an Octagon client, is guaranteed $5.25MM on a deal that also includes performance incentives. Minnesota will need to make a corresponding 40-man move once the deal is finalized. At the start of the offseason, president of baseball operations…

  • Carlos Santana Signs With Twins

    Headshot for Carlos Santana

Free-agent first baseman Carlos Santana has agreed to a one-year deal with the Minnesota Twins worth roughly $5.25 million, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network. The veteran split 2023 with the Pirates and Brewers, slashing .240/.318/.429 while slugging 23 homers. He maintained respectable levels of discipline at the plate with his 10.5 walk rate and 16.8 strikeout rate. Even if Santana's declining defensive value limits him to designated hitter for most of 2024, he remains a strong contributor at the plate and should see significant playing time in Minnesota.

In recent days, MLBTR has taken a position-by-position look at the remaining free agent class (catchers, shortstops, center fielders). We’ll turn now to first base.
