Over the past week, we’ve gone around the diamond with looks at the upcoming free agent class. We round out the offensive players with a look at the designated hitters. Headshot for Andrew McCutchen

Andrew McCutchen’s Pittsburgh homecoming was the feel-good story of the year for Pirates fans, and while it ended on a sour note — McCutchen suffered a partial Achilles tear last week, ending his season — there’s mutual interest in a 2024 reunion. General manager Ben Cherington told Pirates beat writers yesterday that the team and…

  • Andrew McCutchen To Be In Walking Boot For Six Weeks

    Headshot for Andrew McCutchen

Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen (Achilles) will be in a walking boot for six weeks, which basically means his 2023 season has come to an end. The Pirates placed McCutchen on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday with a partial tear of his left Achilles. The 36-year-old veteran is set to hit free agency this offseason after posting a .256/.378/.397 slash line with 12 home runs, 19 doubles, 43 RBI, 11 stolen bases and 55 runs scored in 112 games and 473 plate appearances in his return to Pittsburgh in 2023. McCutchen's career is near its end, but he's said he would like to return for one more season. Wherever he lands, he's likely to continue serving as more of a full-time designated hitter.

  • Andrew McCutchen Leaves Game Early On Monday

    Headshot for Andrew McCutchen

Pittsburgh Pirates DH Andrew McCutchen left his team's game against the Milwaukee Brewers with tightness in his left Achilles' tendon, according to the team. McCutchen had a big game before leaving, going 2-for-3 with two doubles, a run, and an RBI. He was lifted for pinch-hitter Joshua Palacios late in the game, although the Pirates called the move precautionary. McCutchen has a good chance of being back in action in the next day or two. Stay tuned.

  • Andrew McCutchen Starting On The Bench

    Headshot for Andrew McCutchen

Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen will take the day off on Thursday against the visiting Chicago Cubs. Bryan Reynolds will serve as the designated hitter and will bat second, with Joshua Palacios, Ji Hwan Bae and Connor Joe starting for Pittsburgh across the outfield. The 36-year-old McCutchen has served as the team's primary designated hitter for most of the year, and he's having a fine season in his return to the team in which he spent the first nine years of his career. In the month of August, McCutchen is hitting .262 (17-for-65) with two home runs, five doubles, 10 RBI and seven runs scored in 17 starts. He should be back in Friday's lineup in the second game of the series against Chicago.

  • Andrew McCutchen Taking A Day Off Monday

    Headshot for Andrew McCutchen

Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen will start Monday's game against the New York Mets on the bench. It appears to be a normal day of rest for the 36-year-old veteran. Bryan Reynolds will serve as the designated hitter and bat second, while Connor Joe gets the start in left field while hitting leadoff against Mets right-hander Carlos Carrasco. The day of rest for McCutchen comes after he went hitless in seven at-bats with two strikeouts in Sunday's doubleheader against the Cincinnati Reds. McCutchen is having a pretty solid season in his return to Pittsburgh in 2023, but he's gone just 9-for-50 (.180) with no homers, two doubles, three RBI, 15 strikeouts and four runs scored in 14 starts since July 25.

  • Andrew McCutchen Not Expected To Be Traded

    Headshot for Andrew McCutchen

Pittsburgh Pirates veteran outfielder Andrew McCutchen will be a free agent after the 2023 season and might normally be considered a possible trade target for contending teams. However, in this case, there appears to be an understanding between McCutchen and the Pirates that he'll remain in Pittsburgh through the end of this season in a continuation of what has been a strong season for him to this point. The 36-year-old returned to the Bucs this year after spending his first nine MLB seasons in Pittsburgh, and he's currently carrying a .265/.382/.411 slash line with 10 home runs, 12 doubles, 28 RBI, 10 stolen bases and 43 runs scored in 82 games played. It's been more of a struggle for him in July, as he's gone 6-for-43 (.140) with no homers, a double, one steal and five runs scored in 12 games.

  • Andrew McCutchen Activated From Injured List

    Headshot for Andrew McCutchen

The Pittsburgh Pirates activated outfielder Andrew McCutchen (elbow) from the 10-day injured list on Sunday and optioned infielder Rodolfo Castro to Triple-A Indianapolis in a corresponding move. The Pirates also added pitching prospect Quinn Priester to the taxi squad. McCutchen was immediately reinserted into Sunday's starting lineup, serving as the designated hitter and batting third against San Francisco Giants left-hander Alex Wood. Fantasy managers will be hoping that the 36-year-old veteran outfielder can keep up his solid season for Pittsburgh in the second half. McCutchen is returning to a .268/.383/.425 slash line, .808 OPS, 10 home runs, 11 doubles, 28 RBI, nine stolen bases and 38 runs scored in 74 games (316 plate appearances).

  • Andrew McCutchen Hopes To Return On Sunday

    Headshot for Andrew McCutchen

Pittsburgh Pirates designated hitter Andrew McCutchen (elbow) anticipates returning to the lineup for Sunday's game versus the San Francisco Giants. The 36-year-old hit the injured list with right elbow inflammation retroactive to July 6, so he's potentially looking at the minimum stint. McCutchen's seemingly imminent return would provide a spark to Pittsburgh's banged-up lineup also without Ke'Bryan Hayes (back), Oneil Cruz (leg), and Ji Hwan Bae (ankle). McCutchen is slashing a rock-solid .268/.383/.425 with 10 home runs, 28 RBI, nine stolen bases, and 38 runs scored over 361 plate appearances this year.

  • Pirates Place Andrew McCutchen On 10-Day Injured List

    Headshot for Andrew McCutchen

The Pittsburgh Pirates placed outfielder/designated hitter Andrew McCutchen (elbow) on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to July 6) on Friday and also recalled first baseman Ji Man Choi (Achilles) from the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move. To make room for Choi on the 40-man roster, the Bucs activated left-hander Rob Zastryzny (forearm) from the 15-day IL and designated him for assignment. McCutchen continues to struggle with a right-elbow injury, and he'll take some time off going into the All-Star break after going hitless in his last 17 at-bats over four games. McCutchen has been useful in mixed fantasy leagues in 2023 with 10 homers and nine stolen bases in 74 games. Choi is serving as the DH on Friday should see regular at-bats against right-handed pitchers now that he's back and both McCutchen and Ke'Bryan Hayes (knee) are on the shelf.

  • Andrew McCutchen Absent From Thursday's Lineup

    Headshot for Andrew McCutchen

Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen is not in Thursday's lineup against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He is resting Thursday and will sit for the second time in four games. The 36-year-old is hitting .136 (3-for-22) over his previous five games. McCutchen is slashing .268/.383/.425 with 10 home runs, 28 RBI, 38 runs, and nine stolen bases over 74 games in 2023. Fantasy managers with daily moves need to remove McCutchen from their lineups. Carlos Santana will be the team's designated hitter, while Connor Joe handles first base duties. Santana can be used as a streamer against Dodgers southpaw Julio Urias after slashing .351/.385/.703 with three home runs, six RBI, and eight runs scored over his last nine games.

  • Andrew McCutchen Getting A Rest Monday

    Headshot for Andrew McCutchen

Pittsburgh Pirates designated hitter/outfielder Andrew McCutchen will begin Monday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on the bench. The Dodgers are expected to go with right-hander Michael Grove on Monday night as McCutchen takes a seat after going 0-for-9 with two strikeouts against zero walks over his last two contests. It's been a big return to Pittsburgh for the former NL MVP as McCutchen is hitting .278 with 10 home runs, nine stolen bases, and an .830 OPS across 72 appearances on the campaign. His current 129 wRC+ would be his best mark since 2015 if the season ended today. Brian Reynolds will take over as the club's designated hitter Monday night in Los Angeles.

The Rangers have reached out to the Pirates about a potential Andrew McCutchen trade, tweets Jon Morosi of MLB.com, but the Bucs aren’t open to such scenarios at this time. • Rangers Considering Acquiring Andrew McCutchen

    Headshot for Andrew McCutchen

The Texas Rangers have considered the possibility of acquiring Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen, but the Pirates aren't prepared to move him yet. The deal would have particular interest to the Rangers if at least one pitcher is part of the deal as well. The Rangers are seeking more production out of their designated-hitter spot, and the veteran McCutchen is having a fine season with a .271/.394/.431 slash line, an .825 OPS, nine home runs, nine doubles, 24 RBI, nine stolen bases and 34 runs scored in 277 plate appearances over 66 games in his return to Pittsburgh. The Bucs have gone on a skid of late, though, and could very well be sellers at the July trade deadline. The five-time All-Star could have even more fantasy appeal in the second half if he joins the first-place Rangers.
