  • Joey Votto To Undergo Season-Ending Surgery

Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto (shoulder) has opted to undergo surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff. The surgery will take place on Friday. The expected recovery timeline for Votto is about six months, meaning that his 2022 campaign has come to an end. The 38-year-old appeared in 91 games this year and had a tough time at the plate, slashing just .205/.319/.370 with 11 home runs, 41 RBI and 31 runs. Assuming he can stick to a timeline of about six months, he should be ready to return around the start of spring training next year, ahead of what will be his 17th year in the majors.

  • Joey Votto Sitting Against Left-Hander

Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto is not in the starting lineup against the Philadelphia Phillies and left-hander Ranger Suarez on Wednesday. Votto, who has gone just 7-for-51 (.137) with a homer, three RBI and 13 strikeouts in 14 games this month, is getting a day off amidst a slump. The 38-year-old left-handed hitter has really struggled all year, slashing .205/.319/.370 with 11 home runs, 41 RBI and 31 runs scored in 376 plate appearances over 91 games played. He's hitless in his last five games. Matt Reynolds is starting at first base and batting cleanup against Suarez on Wednesday. Reynolds occupies a nice spot in the lineup, but he's gone 14-for-62 (.226) with one of his three home runs against southpaws in 2022.

  • Joey Votto Remains Absent On Friday

Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto (back) remains out of the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays. The lefty slugger sat out both games of the doubleheader on Thursday. This marks the fifth game in a row that Votto has missed due to lingering back tightness. Possibly, the Reds decide to place Votto on the injured list, assuming he doesn't feel better soon. In the meantime, Brandon Drury will cover first base and bat second versus lefty Shane McClanahan on Friday. Fantasy managers should avoid Drury for his tough matchup. Hopefully, Votto will be able to avoid a trip to the injured list.

  • Joey Votto Also Out For Game 2

Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto (back) will sit out of the starting lineup once again for Game 2 of a doubleheader on Thursday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Votto will miss his fourth straight game while dealing with back tightness, and there is still a chance that he'll need a trip to the injured list if he doesn't improve soon. The 38-year-old veteran got off to an extremely cold start this year and hasn't really bounced back, as he's hitting .210/.332/.374 overall with six home runs, 25 RBI and 22 runs scored in 253 plate appearances and 62 games. Mike Moustakas is starting at first base again and will hit sixth against Pirates right-hander Bryse Wilson in Game 2. Moose went 1-for-3 with a walk and strikeout in Game 1 and is hitting only .210 in 2022.

  • Joey Votto Out For Game 1 Thursday

Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto (back) is not in the starting lineup for Game 1 of a doubleheader on Thursday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Votto has been out of action for the last two days due to back tightness, and it remains to be seen if the 38-year-old veteran will return for the second game of the twin bill. On the season, Votto is hitting just .210/.332/.374 with six home runs, 25 RBI and 22 runs scored in 253 plate appearances over 62 games for the Reds. Mike Moustakas will get the nod at the cold corner in Game 1 and will hit sixth against Pirates right-hander Roansy Contreras. Moose is barely over the Mendoza Line himself this year and has gone 5-for-28 (.179) with no homers, three RBI and 15 strikeouts in nine games over the last two weeks.

  • Joey Votto Sitting With Back Tightness Wednesday

Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto (back) is being held out of the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against the New York Mets due to back tightness. Reds manager David Bell stated that Votto has dealt with the ailment before and that the team is just playing things safe by holding Votto out of Wednesday's contest. Votto was also on the bench for Tuesday's game. At the time it seemed like a rest day, but it could have been related to this issue as well. The 38-year-old should be considered day-to-day for now. Brandon Drury will be holding down first base for Wednesday's game.

  • Joey Votto Homers, Tallies Three Hits In Thursday's Loss

The Cincinnati Reds got blown out 15-7 against the Chicago Cubs Thursday night, but first baseman Joey Votto did what he could to stop it, going 3-for-5 with a home run, two runs, and an RBI. The longtime Red is slashing .224/.342/.398 with six home runs, 22 runs, and 25 RBI in 58 games. It's a far cry from Votto's 2021 season numbers, but considering he hit .129 with a .434 OPS in the first month of the season, fantasy managers should be happy with those results. He isn't hitting enough to be a starter in every league, but his .342 OBP still makes him a good contributor in OBP leagues.

  • Joey Votto Sitting Against A Lefty

Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto is getting the day off on Friday against the San Francisco Giants and left-handed starter Carlos Rodon. Votto has been pretty bad this year, but he's gone 6-for-22 (.273) with a 1.156 OPS, two home runs and six RBI in seven games since returning from the COVID injured list on May 20. But the veteran's overall slash still looks terrible at .156/.314/.271 with nine RBI and eight runs scored in 118 plate appearances. The 38-year-old still has time to turn things around, and he's notoriously been a slow starter. Mike Moustakas will play first and hit sixth against Rodon on Friday. Moose is hitting only .220 with three homers and 10 RBI, and he's gone 5-for-26 (.192) against southpaws this year.
