  • Gary Sanchez Moves Into Cleanup Spot Wednesday

    Headshot for Gary Sanchez

San Diego Padres catcher Gary Sanchez is hitting out of the cleanup spot Wednesday against Seattle Mariners right-hander George Kirby. It's just his eighth start of the season for the Padres but the first out of the four-hole, although the promotion certainly makes sense considering Sanchez has already clubbed three homers in short order for the Friars. After bursting onto the scene as a rookie in 2016, the 30-year-old has fallen on tough times lately as he's coming off a .205 average, albeit with 16 home runs, across 128 games with the Twins last season, finishing 11% below the league average according to his 89 wRC+. Despite his hot start with San Diego, he'll have his hands full with a tough right-hander in Kirby Wednesday afternoon in San Diego.

  • Gary Sanchez Goes Deep In Win Over The Cubs

    Headshot for Gary Sanchez

San Diego Padres catcher Gary Sanchez went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run, a walk, and a strikeout in a 5-0 win over the Chicago Cubs on Monday. Sanchez took Kyle Hendricks deep with Manny Machado aboard for his third long ball of the season in the bottom of the second inning. The 30-year-old slugger is slashing .259/.300/.593 to go along with three home runs and seven RBI across 27 at-bats so far this season. He isn't playing every day but Sanchez definitely has some fantasy appeal in deeper mixed and two-catcher leagues.

  • Gary Sanchez Goes Yard In Consecutive Games

    Headshot for Gary Sanchez

San Diego Padres catcher Gary Sanchez went 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI, and two runs scored in Thursday's easy 10-1 win over the Miami Marlins. The 30-year-old is hitting .294 (5-for-17) with two long balls and five RBI in six games this year. It's been quite some time since the once-heralded New York Yankees prodigy has been a fantasy beast, but Sanchez has at least produced in very limited 2023 action. The former Silver Slugger's lack of defensive acumen behind the plate is no secret, but San Diego is in search of an everyday option at designated hitter with neither veteran Nelson Cruz nor Matt Carpenter catching lightning in a bottle. Fantasy managers should keep Sanchez on the back end of their watchlists to see if the two-time All-Star carves out a semi-regular role in the star-studded Friars lineup.

  • Brett Sullivan Optioned To Clear Space For Gary Sanchez

    Headshot for Austin Nola

San Diego Padres catcher Brett Sullivan has been optioned to Triple-A to make space for fellow backstop Gary Sanchez, who was signed by the club Monday night. Needless to say, it was a tough go for Sullivan in his first taste of big-league action this season. The 29-year-old hit just .170 with one homer and a .482 OPS across a rather small sample size of 49 plate appearances on the campaign. Unfortunately for the Padres, Sullivan isn't their only struggling catcher, as Austin Nola is hitting a putrid .131 with one homer and a .434 OPS across his 118 trips to the plate. All told, Padres catchers have combined to produce an MLB-worst .218 wOBA this season, hence the flier on Sanchez despite his own struggles in recent seasons.

  • Gary Sanchez Claimed Off Waivers By Padres

    Headshot for Gary Sanchez

The San Diego Padres have claimed veteran catcher Gary Sanchez off waivers from the New York Mets after he was designated for assignment last Thursday. The former Yankees backstop made just seven trips to the plate for the Mets, going 1-for-17 with an RBI in that time. It's been a rough stretch for a player who burst onto the scene with 20 home runs in just 53 games as a rookie in the 2016 season. Sanchez hit just .205 with 16 home runs and a .659 OPS with the Twins last season before struggling to find a home on the open market this winter. He was signed by the Giants but didn't appear in a big-league game before eventually landing with the Mets for three game appearances. He'll get an opportunity to contribute for a Padres team that ranks dead last with a .218 wOBA from their catchers this season.

The Mets announced that they have reinstated catcher Tomás Nido from the injured list and designated fellow backstop Gary Sánchez for assignment in a corresponding move. • Tomas Nido Reinstated From Injured List, Gary Sanchez DFA'd

    Headshot for Tomas Nido

The New York Mets reinstated catcher Tomas Nido (eye) from the 10-day injured list on Thursday and designated catcher Gary Sanchez for assignment in a corresponding move. Nido missed some time with vision issues, but apparently he's fixed them and is ready face big-league pitching again. Omar Narvaez (calf) is nearing a return from his injured-list stint as well, so for now, Nido will split playing time behind the plate in Queens with youngster Francisco Alvarez. The 29-year-old Nido offers very little fantasy-wise in the deepest of leagues with a .213 career average and only 13 home runs in seven big-league seasons. Sanchez is likely to join Triple-A Syracuse after going 1-for-6 with an RBI and three strikeouts in three games played for the Mets.
