  • Oneil Cruz Could See Playing Time in the Outfield

Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Oneil Cruz could start to see more playing time in the outfield writes The Athletic's Rob Biertempful. On Wednesday Cruz started at shortstop but played the final two innings in center field, and then on Thursday he got the start out in center field. The Pirates have not officially indicated their plans long-term for Cruz, and while Cruz prefers to remain at shortstop Biertempful reports that Cruz will take the opportunity to play in the outfield if he's given the chance. Chances are still that Cruz will start the year in the minors, but positional flexibility could give him a quicker path to the majors and to fantasy relevancy.

  • Ke'Bryan Hayes Remains Hot At The Plate Thursday

Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes picked up his third extra-base hit in as many games Thursday, as he finished 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI in the Pirates' 6-1 victory over Atlanta. This moves Hayes' spring line to 4-for-8 with two doubles, a triple and two RBI through his first three games. Hayes is coming off a monster debut season in which he slashed .376/.442/.682 with five home runs and 11 RBI over 24 games, and he is set to take over the starting job at third base this year. His .294 xBA and .486 xSLG last year suggest that he was somewhat lucky at the plate and could be due for some regression, but he will still be one of the better power-hitting options at third in 2021.

  • David Bednar Strikes Out The Side Thursday

Pittsburgh Pirates relief pitcher David Bednar struck out the side in 15 pitches on Thursday afternoon in a 6-1 victory over the Braves. Bednar earned a hold with his fifth-inning performance in which he struck out Ender Inciarte and Ryan Goins looking before getting a swinging strikeout against Austin Riley. One of the prospects acquired in the Joe Musgrove trade, Bednar has looked sharp in two outings so far this spring as he has allowed no baserunners while striking out five in two innings. He's an interesting add in saves-plus-holds formats, and he could potentially find himself in line for saves later on in the season.

  • Tyler Anderson Strikes Out Three in Pirates Debut

Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Tyler Anderson made his debut with the team on Thursday, allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts over two innings against the Atlanta Braves. Anderson signed a one-year deal with the Pirates last month after spending 2020 with the San Francisco Giants, where he went 4-3 with a 4.37 ERA and a career-low 15.8 percent strikeout rate. He wasn't missing as many bats last year as he posted a career-low 10.1 percent swinging strike rate, but he still managed to improve his ERA and WHIP from 2019. Anderson will not be worth drafting in virtually any format, but with a strong spring he could be worth consideration in NL-only leagues as a matchup-dependent streaming option.

  • Colin Moran Batting Cleanup Thursday

Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Colin Moran is batting cleanup Thursday against the Atlanta Braves. Moran will look to stabilize himself and become the anchor in the middle of the Pirates' order in 2021 after they traded away Josh Bell during the offseason. Moran's strong suit comes against right-handed pitching as he slashed .252/.338/.512 with nine home runs in 2020. He makes for an interesting late-round selection given the position versatility he could provide fantasy players.

  • Todd Frazier Hits Second Homer Of Spring On Tuesday

Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Todd Frazier hit his second home run of the spring and accounted for the only run in the Pirates' 6-1 loss to Detroit on Tuesday. It was his only hit of the game as he finished 1-for-1 with a walk in the five-inning matchup. It's been all power for Frazier this spring as he is now 2-for-4 with two homers, two RBI, a walk and a strikeout. He's fighting for playing time with Colin Moran at first base, and while Frazier is off to a hot start there's still a lot of games left to be played this spring. Managers in deeper formats and NL-only formats should keep an eye on Frazier over the rest of Spring Training, as he could be a good late-round value pick.

  • Mitch Keller Struggles Against Blue Jays on Monday

Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Mitch Keller struggled in his Spring Debut against the Blue Jays on Monday, allowing two runs on three hits with a strikeout in one inning of work. Keller struggled with his command as he recorded 11 strikes on 21 pitches, with only three of those strikes being either a called or swinging strike. 2020 was a step back for Keller in his second season, as he recorded an 18.4 percent strikeout rate and a bloated 20.7 percent walk rate while his 6.07 xERA was significantly worse than his 2.91 ERA. It's only the beginning of spring and there will be plenty of chances to show improvement, but it was not a good start for Keller who remains at best a late-round flyer in 12-team and deeper leagues.

  • Gregory Polanco Homers in Spring Training Debut

Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Gregory Polanco went 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI in a 6-4 Pirates' victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday afternoon. Coming off the worst season of his career in 2020, Polanco showing off some power early this spring will be a welcome sight for managers who hope to see Polanco return to his pre-2019 form. If Polanco continues to swing the bat well during Spring Training he could be a good buy-low candidate in drafts, as his Statcast numbers have remained nearly identical over the last three seasons while his .222 xBA and .414 xSLG suggest he was somewhat unlucky last year when he posted a .153 average and .325 slugging percentage.
