  • Aaron Nola Implodes In Opening Day Start

Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Aaron Nola got lit up in his Opening Day start against the Texas Rangers, allowing five runs over just three and two-thirds innings. Nola was actually cruising for the first three innings, allowing just one baserunner. But things came unraveled in the fourth, where he allowed four hits and a walk, including a three-run homer to Robbie Grossman, before being pulled. The fantasy ace has been known to have these occasional blow-ups, but it is usually few and far between. Expect Nola to bounce back from this performance and put up his usual ace-like numbers this season.

  • Athletics Trade Cristian Pache To Phillies

The Athletics have traded outfielder Cristian Pache to the Phillies in exchange for minor league right-hander Billy Sullivan, per announcements from both teams. The Phillies opened a spot on the 40-man roster by placing first baseman Rhys Hoskins on the 60-day injured list. Once one of the sport’s top-ranked overall prospects, the now 24-year-old Pache…

  • Rockies Trade T.J. Zeuch To Phillies

The Rockies have traded T.J. Zeuch to the Phillies, according to the right-hander’s transaction log at MLB.com. He was not on Colorado’s 40-man roster, so he’ll add some non-roster depth to the upper minors with Philadelphia. Zeuch signed a minor league deal with Colorado over the offseason. The 6’7″ hurler pitched four times this spring, allowing…

  • Rhys Hoskins To Have Knee Surgery Thursday

Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins (knee) will undergo left ACL reconstruction surgery on Thursday in Texas, and the procedure will be performed by Dr. Steve Singleton. Hoskins tore his left ACL in a Grapefruit League game last week and will miss the entire 2023 season. It's a tough blow for anyone that already drafted the 30-year-old slugger. He's set to become a free agent this winter. If you have a draft before Opening Day on Thursday, you'll obviously want to avoid him. With Hoskins done, Darick Hall is expected to see most of the playing time at the hot corner for the Phillies in 2023. Hall hits left-handed and could sit against lefty pitchers, with Alec Bohm sliding over to first and either Edmundo Sosa or Josh Harrison playing third those days.

  • NL Notes: Strahm, Mendick, Hamels, Panik

With Ranger Suarez unlikely to be ready for the first turn through the rotation this season, Phillies manager Rob Thomson announced to reporters, including Alex Coffey of The Philadelphia Inquirer, that left-hander Matt Strahm would start the fifth game of the season for Philadelphia, joining Aaron Nola, Zack Wheeler, Taijuan Walker and Bailey Falter in the…

  • Matt Strahm To Begin Season As Starter

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Matt Strahm will begin the season as the fifth starter, according to manager Rob Thompson. It was reported earlier in the spring that Strahm was going to be a multi-inning reliever this season. However, the injury to Ranger Suarez (forearm) has changed the Phillies plans for Strahm. He's expected to throw around 65-70 pitches during his first outing as a starter. The expectation is that Strahm will head back to the bullpen once Suarez is back. It's unlikely that Strahm pitches deep into games considering he's not stretched out to start. He'll be a risky streaming option in his first start against the New York Yankees.

  • Dombrowski: Darick Hall Favorite For Majority Of First Base Reps

The Phillies were dealt a huge blow yesterday when Rhys Hoskins went down with an ACL tear that’ll require surgery. They’ll now have to patch things together at first base unexpectedly. Darick Hall appears the next man up. The left-handed hitter got into his first 42 MLB games last season. He connected on nine longballs and slugged…

  • Phillies Name Aaron Nola The Opening Day Starter

The Philadelphia Phillies named right-hander Aaron Nola as their Opening Day starter for next Thursday against the Texas Rangers. It will be Nola's sixth straight Opening Day nod. It speaks to how good the 29-year-old has been as the team's ace. He'll be facing off against ex-division-rival ace Jacob deGrom as well. Nola finished fourth in the National League Cy Young voting in 2022 after going 11-13 in the regular season with a 3.25 ERA (2.58 FIP), 0.96 WHIP and 29.1 percent strikeout rate in 32 starts covering 205 innings. He's a fantasy ace for those drafting this weekend, and RotoBaller has him ranked No. 7 among starting pitchers.

  • Rhys Hoskins To Get A Second Opinion

Philadelphia Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said that first baseman Rhys Hoskins (knee) will get a second opinion on his injured left knee, but it's clear there's a tear in his ACL. The Phillies still expect him to miss the entire 2023 season after his knee gave out on him in a Grapefruit League game on Thursday. It's terrible news for fantasy managers that already drafted Hoskins in 2023. If you have yet to draft, you'll obviously want to avoid the 30-year-old slugger this year. With Hoskins done, Darick Hall is expected to get the majority of playing time at first base for the Phillies, with Jake Cave another potential option at the cold corner for the Phillies.

  • Darick Hall To See Bulk Of Starts At First Base

Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Darick Hall is expected to see most of his playing time coming at first base, according to Phillies president Dave Dombrowski. This comes a day after Rhys Hoskins (knee) tore his ACL on a non-contact play. It's uncertain if Hall is going to play against both righty and lefty pitchers. This could very well end up as a platoon situation, but Hall is still worth a look as a deep league option. He smashed nine home runs and 16 RBI in 42 games with the Phillies last season. The 27-year-old has already hit five homers this spring. The left-handed slugger has a ton of power, but also is prone to strikeout quite a bit. It sounds like the Phillies are going to give Hall a chance to prove himself.

  • Rhys Hoskins Tears ACL

After a scary non-contact injury while fielding a routine ground ball during Thursday's action, the team announced that first-baseman Rhys Hoskins (knee) tore his ACL. A subsequent MRI revealed that he had a left knee anterior cruciate ligament tear, which would require an ACL reconstruction. The timetable is unknown as of now, but Hoskins is doubtful to play in 2023. The 30-year-old was having quite a productive spring as displayed by his .355/.474/.806 slash line with four home runs. Hoskins is a premier first baseman in the game and such a devastating injury makes an impact on the entire league. As a replacement, Darick Hall is likely to fill the void at first base for the upcoming season.

  • Rhys Hoskins Seen Walking After Knee Injury

Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson said that he's unsure what first baseman Rhys Hoskins' (knee) injury is yet, but Hoskins was walking around the clubhouse after getting checked out by trainers on Thursday. Hoskins' knee gave out on him in the second inning of the Grapefruit League game on Thursday against the Detroit Tigers, and he had to be carted off the field. While it looked like a pretty bad injury on the field, the fact that he was seen walking around after the game could be good news for his prognosis. Fantasy managers will still want to check back for more updates on his condition and how long he might be out to start the 2023 regular season.

  • Rhys Hoskins Suffers Knee Injury Thursday

Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins (knee) suffered a bad left knee injury in a Grapefruit League game on Thursday against the Detroit Tigers and needed to be carted off the field. Hoskins was injured in the second inning when his knee gave out on him. It didn't look good, but we'll have more information on his injury when it becomes available. Fantasy managers that already drafted the 30-year-old slugger can do nothing more than hold their breath and hope that this isn't a season-ending injury. At the very least, Hoskins will begin the 2023 regular season on the injured list for the Phillies.

  • Brandon Marsh Back In Thursday's Lineup

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Brandon Marsh (finger) is back in the team's Grapefruit League lineup on Thursday against the Detroit Tigers and left-hander Joey Wentz. Marsh is manning center field and batting ninth in the order. The 25-year-old missed Wednesday's spring game due to a broken blood vessel in his left middle finger, but the injury obviously isn't very serious at all. He is looking to get things going at the plate before Opening Day, as he's gone just 8-for-37 (.216) with two doubles, one homer, five RBI, six runs scored and a stolen base in 14 Grapefruit League games for the Phils. Marsh still strikes out way too much and won't be an everyday player, but with speed in the strong side of a platoon in center field in Philly, he'll be useful in deep-mixed leagues.

  • Ranger Suarez Likely To Begin Year On IL

Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Ranger Suarez (forearm) is unlikely to be ready for the start of the season. The lefty still has inflammation in his left forearm and could begin the year on the injured list. He was sent for an MRI on Tuesday, and there was no structural damage. Matt Strahm seems like the pitcher to benefit from Suarez's injury and could pick up a few spot starts. Suarez posted a 3.65 ERA last year with a 1.33 WHIP and is best suited for NL-Only or deeper formats.

  • Kyle Schwarber A Mixed Bag In WBC

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Kyle Schwarber has been hit or miss in the World Baseball Classic thus far. Schwarber is 2-for-11 but has four walks. One of his hits was a home run and he has three RBI and three runs in the tournament. He has played in four games heading into Tuesday's finals matchup against Team Japan. The lefty has a .308 average and .438 on-base percentage in 13 spring training at-bats. Batting average will never be Schwarber's forte, as he hit just .218 last season, but he did hit 46 home runs and drive in 94. He also stole 10 bases in 2022 and plays in a stacked lineup that should help pad his counting stats again this season. Look to draft him in the top 45 while racking up the homers.

  • J.T. Realmuto Wielding Hot Bat In WBC

Philadelphia Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto is 5-for-8 with a double and two RBI during the World Baseball Classic. Realmuto has also walked once without a strikeout in his three games behind the dish. Realmuto was hitting .500 in eight spring at-bats before heading to the WBC, so he's been in midseason form all spring. He had another elite season in 2022 and heads into 2023 as the No. 1 catcher in baseball. He has a RotoBaller rank of 37 and an ADP of 43.3. He'll have one more game on Tuesday in the WBC final against Japan to show why he's the game's best. Draft him as the top catcher and reap the rewards that come with it.

  • Bryce Harper Won't Open Season On 60-Day Injured List

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Bryce Harper (elbow) will not open the 2023 regular season on the 60-day injured list, according to president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski. The Phillies can put Harper on the 60-day IL at any time, if needed, retroactive to Opening Day. It doesn't mean that he'll be back earlier than anticipated around midseason, but it keeps the Phillies' options open. The 30-year-old former MVP is recovering from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow and isn't expected to make his 2023 debut until near the end of the first half of the season, and he's unsure if he'll even play the outfield at all this year. Harper is still worth stashing in all fantasy leagues, and managers will be hoping he can pick up right where he left off last postseason at the plate.

  • Phillies Acquire Jordan Qsar From Rays

The Phillies have acquired outfielder Jordan Qsar from the Rays, reports Bob Nightengale of USA Today. The Phillies are sending cash considerations the other way, per Matt Gelb of The Athletic. • Phillies Release Mark Appel

The Philadelphia Phillies released right-hander Mark Appel on Monday. The former No. 1 overall pick back in 2013 finally made his big-league debut last year and allowed two earned runs on nine hits while walking three and striking out five in 10 1/3 innings over six relief appearances. However, he dealt with right elbow inflammation at the end of 2022 and really struggled in his six appearances in spring training before the Phillies cut him loose. The 31-year-old will now try to latch on with another organization before the start of the 2023 regular season, which is expected to be his last in professional baseball.

  • Phillies Notes: Strahm, Suarez, Plassmeyer

The Phillies are stretching lefty Matt Strahm out to handle a multi-inning relief option, tweets Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Manager Rob Thomson said this week that the organization’s goal is for Strahm to be built up to the point that he can handle three-inning stints by the end of camp, Lauber notes. He’s…
