Latest On Marlins' Rotation
Even after trading Pablo López for Luis Arraez as part of their effort to overhaul the lineup, the Marlins go into 2023 with a strong group of starting pitchers. Defending Cy Young award winner Sandy Alcantara is followed by Jesús Luzardo, Trevor Rogers and offseason pickup Johnny Cueto. The fifth spot has at least been a bit up in the air,…
Mar 17 · MLB Trade Rumors Marlins Sandy Alcantara Luis Arraez Edward Cabrera Johnny Cueto Braxton Garrett Trevor RogersSandy Alcantara Showing No Rust This Spring
Miami Marlins pitcherSandy Alcantarais enjoying a hot start to his spring on the heels of earning the NL Cy Young Award in 2022. The right-hander has pitched in just two games spanning 4 2/3 innings but has yielded just one earned run on four hits and two walks in that time. His 1.29 WHIP and two strikeouts in that span don't stand out, but Alcantara remains stingy through 74 Grapefruit League pitches nonetheless. It was a marvelous 2022 campaign for the Marlins' ace as Alcantara hurled a 2.28 ERA with a 17.7% K-BB% ratio across 32 starts spanning an MLB-best 228 2/3 innings pitched. The Dominican Republic native also managed to go 14-9 on a Marlins club that finished just 69-93 a season ago. Despite a lukewarm career 21.9 K%, Alcantara is one of the game's elite fantasy arms entering the 2023 campaign.

Astros Notes: Gurriel, McCullers, Bullpen
As Yuli Gurriel’s free agency lingered into the late stages of the offseason, many Astros fans wondered whether there might be potential for a reunion between the two parties. Houston GM Dana Brown candidly acknowledged last month that while the organization loved Gurriel as both a person and a player, it would be difficult to…

The Marlins announced to reporters, including Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald, that they have selected infielder/outfielder Garrett Hampson to the roster. In a corresponding move, right-hander Anthony Bender was placed on the 60-day injured list. Hampson had an opt-out in his deal, per Craig Mish of the Miami Herald. Hampson, 28, spent his entire…

Mar 10 · MLB Trade Rumors Marlins Yuli GurrielJose Iglesias Signs Minor League Deal
The Miami Marlins have signed shortstop Jose Iglesias to a minor-league deal on Thursday. They also reportedly signed Yulieski Gurriel as well, so they've added multiple infielders to their roster. The expectation is that Iglesias will provide utility depth to their infield. The 33-year-old is likely to compete with Garrett Hampson for a spot on the Opening Day roster. There isn't much fantasy value with Iglesias, but he has been a consistent hitter throughout his career. Last season, Iglesias hit .292/.328/.380 with three homers and two steals with the Colorado Rockies.

Yuliesky Gurriel Agrees To Deal With Marlins
The Miami Marlins have signed first baseman Yulieski Gurriel to an undisclosed deal on Thursday. The assumption is that it's going to be a one-year minor-league deal. The 38-year-old should provide depth at first base and designated hitter for Miami. Last season, Gurriel struggled at the plate with a .647 OPS and only eight home runs. It's unlikely that he has much left in the tank at this point in his career. He might be worth watching in deep leagues, but we'll wait and see how much he plays in Miami.

A.J. Puk Throws Live Batting Practice
Miami Marlins left-hander A.J. Puk (groin) threw a live batting practice session on Tuesday morning in camp, and the next step is for him to make his Grapefruit League debut on Friday as long as he checks out fine. The 27-year-old southpaw is taking things slow in spring training while dealing with left adductor tightness, but barring another setback, he has plenty of time to get ready for Opening Day. Puk was going to be more interesting for fantasy managers in a potential starting role for the Oakland Athletics, but he was traded to the Marlins. In Miami, he should be put into a high-leverage bullpen role, and he could see some save opportunities in the team's closer-by-committee approach.

Marlins Continue To Talk With Yuli Gurriel
The Miami Marlins continue to talk with free-agent first baseman Yuli Gurriel, according to sources. If they were to sign him, it would likely be a minor-league deal with an invitation to big-league spring training. Gurriel remains on the open market a year after slashing .242/.288/.360 with a career-low .647 OPS, eight home runs, 53 RBI, 53 runs scored and career-high eight stolen bases in 584 plate appearances and 146 games for the Houston Astros. The 38-year-old also sprained his right MCL in the World Series, although he should be fully healthy for Opening Day this year. Gurriel can handle himself defensively at first base, but his offensive skills are in decline and he's unlikely to be very attractive in fantasy if he lands in Miami.

Tanner Scott Throws Live Batting Practice
Miami Marlins relief pitcher Tanner Scott (biceps) is throwing live batting practice on Tuesday. If he comes out of the session well, Scott will make his Grapefruit League debut on Friday. The 28-year-old left-hander has been slightly behind the other pitchers in camp due to left biceps discomfort, but as long as he doesn't suffer any setbacks, he should be ready for Opening Day. The Marlins will roll into the regular season with a closer committee, so Scott could have some save opportunities alongside Dylan Floro, Matt Barnes and potentially A.J. Puk. Scott struck out 90 hitters in 62 2/3 innings, but he also had a bloated 15.9 percent walk rate. He had a career-high 20 saves in 2022. If you can live with the walks, Scott will be useful for K's and holds.

Steven Okert Makes Third Spring Appearance Sunday
Miami Marlins relief pitcher Steven Okert (triceps) made his third Grapefruit League outing on Sunday in a 4-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox, striking out one in a scoreless inning of work. So far in spring training action, the 31-year-old left-hander hasn't allowed a run in his three innings of work while striking out two and walking one. He finished the 2022 campaign on the injured list with left triceps tightness, but he looks ready to go for Opening Day this year. In his second year in Miami in 2022, Okert finished with a strong 2.98 ERA (4.36 FIP), 1.17 WHIP, 26 walks and career-high 63 strikeouts in 51 1/3 innings over 60 relief outings. He's probably not a candidate for save chances in Miami, but he could be useful in deep holds leagues.
