The Marlins have activated right-hander Elieser Hernandez from the injured list and designated Aneurys Zabala for assignment, per Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald (via Twitter). • Garrett Cooper Scuffling At The Plate

Miami Marlins first baseman/outfielder Garrett Cooper went hitless in Friday's 2-1 loss against the Chicago Cubs, going 0-for-4 with a walk. He's in a terrible slump, hitting .082 with 17 strikeouts over his last 15 games. Across 86 games this season, Cooper's been productive, slashing .275/.344/.422 with seven home runs, 42 RBI, and 28 runs. The 31-year-old can be dropped in standard leagues, but he still has relevance in deeper leagues, even as just a bench bat.

  • Peyton Burdick Making MLB Debut Friday

Miami Marlins outfield prospect Peyton Burdick was called up from Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday and will make his major league debut against Chicago Cubs left-hander Justin Steele, as he's starting in left field and hitting seventh in the batting order. The club's No. 10 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, could see regular playing time in Miami's outfielder after Jesus Sanchez was sent down on Thursday. In 88 games for Jacksonville before his call-up, Burdick was hitting .229/.344/.430 with 14 home runs, 51 RBI, 70 runs scored and eight stolen bases in 385 plate appearances. The 25-year-old right-handed hitter has plus power to all fields, but his aggressive approach at the plate leads to a lot of swing and miss. Those in need of power down the stretch in deeper leagues should give Burdick a look.

  • Jon Berti, Brian Anderson Beginning Rehab Assignments

Miami Marlins infielders Jon Berti (groin) and Brian Anderson (shoulder) will both begin minor league rehab assignments with Triple-A Jacksonville this weekend. Berti has been out almost three weeks with a left groin strain, while Anderson has been on the injured list since July 24. Both players are nearing a return to the major league roster and could be reinstated from the injured list at some point early next week, barring a setback in minor league action. Berti has been much more valuable in fantasy in 2022 than Anderson, slashing .271/.365/.375 with two home runs, 19 RBI, 32 runs scored and a league-leading 28 stolen bases, so he needs to be grabbed immediately if he's available in your league. Anderson has hit .256/.346/.378 with three homers, 12 RBI, 26 runs and a stolen base in 180 at-bats.

  • Edward Cabrera Activated Off Injured List

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Edward Cabrera (elbow) has been activated off the 15-day injured list. The right-hander landed on the injured list in the middle of June with elbow tendinitis. Before that, Cabrera was posting a 3.45 ERA with 15 strikeouts in three starts with the Marlins. Conveniently, the Marlins haven't announced a starting pitcher for Friday's game against the Chicago Cubs. The assumption is that Cabrera will take the mound for Friday's afternoon matchup. The 25-year-old could be an interesting streaming option against the mediocre Cubbies lineup.

  • Luke Williams Steals Three Bases

Miami Marlins utility man Luke Williams stole three bases against the Cincinnati Reds Wednesday, going 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored in the 3-0 victory. Williams has been receiving regular playing time of late, and while he offers very little power with just one home run in 79 at-bats this season, seven of his nine steals have come in the last 30 games, and he could be a solid cheap option for fantasy managers desperate for speed.

  • Sandy Alcantara Throws Complete-Game Shutout

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara tossed a complete-game shutout win over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday, allowing six hits while walking one and striking out three in nine innings. The 26-year-old All-Star now has a major league-leading three complete games this year, and he's now 10-4 with a pristine 1.88 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, 141 strikeouts and 40 walks in 158 1/3 innings pitched over 22 starts this season. Alcantara has been one of the most dominant arms in all of baseball this year, and he's a must-start every time he toes the rubber in fantasy. His next start is scheduled to come against the Philadelphia Phillies next week.

  • Avisail Garcia Lands On The 10-Day Injured List

Miami Marlins outfielder Avisail Garcia (hamstring) was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a strained left hamstring. He was removed from Tuesday's game against the Cincinnati Reds with left hamstring discomfort. The 31-year-old has struggled this season, slashing .232/.269/.322 with seven home runs, 30 RBI, and 29 runs in 88 games. Garrett Cooper (wrist) was reinstated from the injured list in a corresponding move. Cooper has been solid this season, slashing .279/.347/.426 with seven home runs, 40 RBI, and 28 runs in 84 games. The Marlins are also with Jorge Soler (back), Cooper, JJ Bleday, and Bryan De La Cruz should see an uptick in at-bats while Miami is short-handed in the outfield.

  • Avisail Garcia Exits Early With Hamstring Discomfort

Miami Marlins outfielder Avisail Garcia (hamstring) was removed from Tuesday's game against the Cincinnati Reds with left hamstring discomfort. He went 0-for-1 before exiting in the second inning. The severity of Garcia's injury is unknown now, and he's considered daily. He will undergo further evaluation and the team should provide an update after the game. The 31-year-old has struggled this season, slashing .232/.269/.322 with seven home runs, 30 RBI, and 29 runs in 88 games. JJ Bleday replaced Garcia in Tuesday's game. Bleday would see an uptick in playing time if Garcia were to miss any time.

  • Braxton Garrett Fans 11 On Tuesday

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Braxton Garrett was feeling it against the Cincinnati Reds during Tuesday's 2-1 loss. Over 5.2 innings, the left-hander gave up two runs on three hits, walked two, and struck out 11 batters. Garrett is breaking out in his third season in the big leagues despite just two wins, posting a 3.88 ERA and 1.16 WHIP with 66 strikeouts and 14 walks across 58 innings. Look for the 24-year-old to sustain his breakout and keep providing fantasy managers with production in three categories.

  • Jesus Luzardo Turns In Solid Start Monday

Miami Marlins left-hander Jesus Luzardo struck out five batters in five innings against the Cincinnati Reds in his latest start on Monday. Luzardo also scattered just three hits and a pair of earned runs in five innings, throwing 81 pitches on the day. Overall, it was a solid outing for the starter, who logged 12 swinging strikes on the day and finished with a 31% CSW rate. He's now sporting a 3.97 ERA and a 3.35 FIP, to go along with 46 strikeouts and 16 walks, in 34 innings of work this season.

  • Jordan Groshans Heading To Miami

The Miami Marlins are acquiring infield prospect Jordan Groshans from the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday in exchange for right-handed relievers Anthony Bass and Zach Pop and an unnamed smaller piece. Groshans is a top-100 prospect and was ranked as the Blue Jays' No. 4 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, before the trade. The 22-year-old is currently a shortstop, but he could make the move to the hot corner eventually. In 67 games for Triple-A Buffalo this year, he hit .250/.348/.296 with one home run, 24 RBI, 30 runs scored and two stolen bases in 279 plate appearances. Groshans was once believed to have plus potential power, but that hasn't been the case in recent seasons, as he's gone deep just eight times in the last two seasons.

  • Anthony Bass, Zach Pop Dealt To Blue Jays

The Toronto Blue Jays are acquiring relief pitcher Anthony Bass, right-hander Zach Pop and a smaller unnamed piece on Tuesday in exchange for infield prospect Jordan Groshans. The Blue Jays had been looking to upgrade their bullpen for a run at a postseason spot, so Bass and Pop will be inserted as late-inning setup men in Toronto in front of closer Jordan Romano. Bass has been excellent this year, posting a 1.41 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 45:10 K:BB in 44 2/3 innings, but his fantasy value won't change all that much in a setup role in Toronto. Pop has been solid but not spectacular, going 2-0 with a 3.60 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 14 strikeouts in 20 relief innings for the Fish.

  • Dodgers Could Be Targeting Pablo Lopez

According to Jack Harris of the LA Times, the Los Angeles Dodgers are reportedly targeting Miami Marlins right-hander Pablo Lopez ahead of MLB's August 2 trade deadline. Harris does go on to Tweet that a deal for Lopez would probably only take place if the Dodgers don't land Juan Soto at the deadline. The two teams have apparently had discussions centered around Lopez, who will still be under team control for two years after the 2022 season. Lopez has a 7-6 record, 3.41 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and 119 strikeouts over 118 2/3 innings of work in 2022. The 26-year-old is one of the more talented arms in the National League, although he does come with some injury concerns. The return for Lopez should be substantial if the Marlins do decide to deal him.

  • Jesus Luzardo Starting On Monday Against Reds

Miami Marlins left-hander Jesus Luzardo (forearm) has been activated from the 60-day injured list and is starting on Monday against the Cincinnati Reds. In a corresponding move, Jake Fishman has been designated for assignment. While Luzardo might be a little extra risky in his first major league start since May 10, but the 24-year-old southpaw needs to be rostered in most fantasy leagues. Before his early season injury, he was 2-3 with a 4.03 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP while striking out 41 and walking 16 in 29 innings over six starts. Luzardo was able to throw 75 pitches in his final minor league rehab start, so he'll probably be somewhat limited on Monday against Cincy.

  • Pablo Lopez Knocked Out In Third Inning Sunday

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Pablo Lopez had his worst start of the year Sunday, as the Mets knocked him out with six runs on 12 hits in just 2 2/3 innings of work. Lopez struck out one batter and did not walk anyone in his sixth loss of the season. Lopez, who has seen his name come up in trade rumors of late, had otherwise enjoyed a typically strong season, with a 3.41 ERA and 1.12 WHIP to his name even after this disastrous performance. He has struck out 119 batters in 118 2/3 innings over 21 starts and will look to right the ship in his next trip to the mound later this week.

  • Trevor Rogers Put On Injured List With Back Spasms

Miami Marlins left-handed pitcher Trevor Rogers (back) has been placed on the 15-day IL with lower back spasms, retroactive to July 26. This might be a good thing for Rogers, who has fallen on tough times this season and could use a break to reset and figure out what is going on. The injury could also explain, at least partially, why the lefty went from rookie of the year candidate to dumpster fire in just one season. Rogers sports an ugly 4-10 record, 5.85 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, and 83/41 K/BB ratio in 87 IP. At least now fantasy managers who were holding out hope can put Rogers on the IL.

  • Edward Cabrera Dominant In Rehab Outing

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Edward Cabrera (elbow) was terrific in his Triple-A rehab start for Jacksonville, tossing five innings of shutout baseball in his team's win. The right-hander allowed just one hit on the evening while striking out seven and walking no one in the 61-pitch effort. This marks the third rehab start for Cabrera who is working his way back from elbow tendinitis that shelved him in the middle of June. Through 15 2/3 big-league innings so far in 2022, Cabrera held his own with six earned runs allowed (3.45 ERA), a 1.21 WHIP, and 15 punchouts. He'll get at least one more start in the minors before returning to the Marlins, and could prove to be a valuable fantasy asset for the final two months if he doesn't suffer any setbacks.

  • Daniel Castano Dodges A Bullet

A CT scan came back normal on Miami Marlins left-hander Daniel Castano (concussion) on Thursday after he was hit in the forehead by a 104 mph comebacker in his outing against the Cincinnati Reds. Castano got the start and allowed an earned run on two hits in just two-thirds of an inning before departing the contest. The 27-year-old southpaw was diagnosed with a mild concussion and forehead contusion, but it could have been much worse. Although he may not be out for an extended period of time, there's still a good chance he'll go on the seven-day injured list. Coming into the day, Castano was 1-3 with a 3.86 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, 20 strikeouts and nine walks in 35 innings over nine outings (six starts).

  • Daniel Castano Hit In The Head By A Comebacker

Miami Marlins left-hander Daniel Castano (forehead) was involved in a scary incident during Thursday's game against the Cincinnati Reds. He was hit in his head by a comebacker off the bat of Reds infielder Donovan Solano. The hit was clocked off Solano's bat at 104.3 mph. Castano was removed from the game and he was able to walk off the field under his own power. As he walked off, a massive bruise on his forehead was on full display. The initial evaluation from the team was that he suffered a mild concussion and a forehead contusion. He will still be evaluated further and we should have more updates on his status later.

  • Max Meyer To Undergo Tommy John Surgery

Miami Marlins pitching prospect Max Meyer (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles in the near future after his MRI exam on Monday showed a tear in his UCL. Meyer was making just his second major league start when he was forced to leave the game with right elbow discomfort, and now he'll miss the rest of this season and most of 2023. It's a big blow for the team's No. 2 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, after he gave up five earned runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking two in six innings in his first two MLB starts this year. In 13 starts with Single-A Jupiter and Triple-A Jacksonville this year, Meyer had a 3.69 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, 69 strikeouts and 19 walks in 61 innings pitched.

  • Dodgers Looking At Garrett Cooper

The Los Angeles Dodgers have been looking at Miami Marlins All-Star first baseman/outfielder Garrett Cooper (wrist), but teams in the Juan Soto sweepstakes might wait to act on other hitters. Cooper also just landed on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday with a right wrist contusion after he was hit by a pitch last Saturday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 31-year-old won't be back until after the Aug. 2 trade deadline, but he could certainly help an already strong Dodgers lineup down the stretch if he's healthy. In 84 games for the Fish this year, Cooper has a slash line of .279/.347/.426 with seven home runs, 40 RBI and 28 runs scored in 337 plate appearances.

  • Tanner Scott Earns 13th Save Of Season Tuesday

Miami Marlins relief pitcher Tanner Scott picked up his 13th save of the season in Tuesday's 2-1 win over the Reds. Scott entered the game in the ninth inning to protect a one-run lead and delivered a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout. Scott has seen the majority of save opportunities for the Marlins this season but has been inconsistent at times. He has now converted 13 of 17 save opportunities with a 4.32 ERA, a 12.74 K/9 rate, and a 6.05 BB/9 rate. The Miami Marlins are reportedly listening to trade offers for everyone not named Sandy Alcantara as the Aug. 2 trade deadline approaches. Alcantara, who made the All-Star team this year for the second time in his six major league seasons, currently leads baseball with a 1.81 ERA and two shutouts in 144 1/3 innings pitched over 20 starts, so it's understandable why he's off limits. Entering Tuesday's action, the Marlins stand at 45-51 and 14 games back of the division-leading New York Mets in the National League East. They are only 5.5 games back of the second wild-card spot, but there are also three teams in front of them for that race, so it's unlikely that they'll be looking at a postseason berth in 2022.

The 23-year-old is taking things slowly in his recovery and hasn't had any setbacks, but he still has a ways to go and is not expected to pitch in the majors at all in 2022. The 24-year-old tossed three scoreless frames and struck out seven while walking just one for Double-A Pensacola last Friday. If everything goes smoothly on Thursday, there's a chance that he could rejoin the Marlins rotation after that. Before his injury, he had earned regular playing time at the keystone for the Fish by hitting .271/.365/.375 with two home runs, 19 RBI, 32 runs scored and a league-leading 28 stolen bases in 222 plate appearances over 58 games. So far this season, the right-hander has pitched to a 4.50 ERA and a 5.34 FIP in 14 innings for the Marlins. He's also logged six saves, though, at the moment, Tanner Scott has taken over as Miami's closer. The Miami Marlins promoted top prospect JJ Bleday to the MLB roster on Saturday. The 24-year-old outfielder is a former first-round draft pick and has been a top 100 prospect for three seasons since being drafted in 2019. Although he has fallen out of the MLB Pipeline top 100 mid-season rankings, he is still the Marlins' number four prospect. He's had a tough time hitting for average in the minors but seems to have found his power stroke this season, bashing 20 homers over 367 plate appearances. He will strike out quite a bit, but also walks at a good rate. He isn't in the starting lineup tonight, which likely indicates he won't play every day against lefties for now.
