  • Ryan Yarbrough Continues Making Progress

Kansas City Royals pitcher Ryan Yarbrough (groin) threw one inning during a minor league game on Thursday. Manager Matt Quatraro mentioned that everything went great during his outing. The left-hander has been dealing with a minor groin injury throughout camp. The hope is that Yarbrough will be able to make a Cactus League appearance soon. He is progressing well and should be available on Opening Day. However, his exact role with the team is unknown right now. Yarbrough has been a swingman throughout his career, so it's possible he continues with that role in Kansas City. The 31-year-old could have some streaming appeal when starting, but it would be dependent on the lineup he's pitching against on that day.

  • Royals Sign Jake Brentz To Two-Year Deal

The Kanas City Royals signed left-hander Jake Brentz to an undisclosed two-year extension on Thursday. Brentz will miss all of this season after having Tommy John surgery on his left elbow last July. The 28-year-old southpaw reliever made just eight relief appearances for the Royals before his injury in 2022 in just his second major-league season, and he allowed 11 hits and 15 runs (14 earned) while walking 10 and striking out nine in just 5 1/3 innings pitched. In 2021, he had a 3.66 ERA (4.23 FIP), 1.28 WHIP, two saves and 76 strikeouts in 64 relief innings. Brentz is obviously well off the fantasy radar for now.

  • Salvador Perez Enjoying Productive World Baseball Classic

Kansas City Royals catcherSalvador Perezis enjoying a big World Baseball Classic for Team Venezuela, who sit atop Pool D with a clean 4-0 record for the tournament. The 32-year-old Perez has gone 5-for-10, with four of those hits coming in extra-base variety via a home run and three doubles. The veteran backstop now owns a massive 1.645 OPS in a small three-game sample after a solid start to his spring in Cactus League action with the Royals. Before departing for the World Baseball Classic, Perez hit .313 with one HR and one stolen base alongside a .813 OPS across 16 at-bats. After tyingVladimir Guerrero Jr.for the MLB lead with 48 HR in 2021, Perez predictably regressed to 23 long balls in 2022, albeit in just 114 games. He will once again serve as the Royals' primary catcher in 2023 but will also see a good chunk of time as a designated hitter.

Melendez appeared in 129 games with the Royals last season, hitting .217 with an impressive 18 HR, two SB, and a .706 OPS across 534 trips to the plate. • Michael Massey Returns To Spring Lineup

Kansas City Royals second baseman Michael Massey (ankle) is back in the team's Cactus League lineup on Sunday against the Cleveland Guardians and right-hander Xzavion Curry. Massey is starting at second base and is hitting seventh in KC's batting order. The 24-year-old hasn't played since being hit in the ankle by a pitch on Wednesday. • Collin Snider Looking Good This Spring

Kansas City Royals relief pitcher Collin Snider has looked good so far in Cactus League games, allowing just one hit and no runs while walking none and striking out three in three relief innings to this point. The 27-year-old right-hander is unlikely to have a high-leverage role in KC's bullpen in 2023, but he's one to watch. In his rookie season for the Royals in 2022 he struggled, going 4-2 with a 6.55 ERA (4.45 FIP), 1.60 WHIP, seven holds and weak 14.6 percent strikeout rate in 34 1/3 relief innings over 42 appearances out of the bullpen. His track record in the minors (5.92 ERA at Triple-A Omaha) doesn't bode well for future success in the majors, either.

  • Michael Massey Day-To-Day With Ankle Contusion

Kansas City Royals second baseman Michael Massey (ankle) is being listed as day-to-day after leaving Wednesday night's Cactus League game against the Chicago White Sox with an ankle contusion. Massey fouled a ball off his foot and was removed from the game as a precaution. The 24-year-old should be just fine for Opening Day later this month. In his first 52 major-league games last year, Massey slashed .243/.307/.376 with a .683 OPS, four home runs, 17 RBI, 16 runs scored and three stolen bases in 194 plate appearances. With Whit Merrifield now in Toronto, Massey has a clear path to regular playing time at the keystone, and he could offer some decent pop for those in AL-only leagues in 2023.
