Red Sox Acquire Angel Pierre From Royals
The Red Sox announced that infielder Angel Pierre has been acquired from the Royals. Pierre is the player to be named later included along with Adalberto Mondesi in the January swap that sent Josh Taylor to Kansas City. Pierre was an international signing for the Royals in January 2022, and the 19-year-old’s first year as…
Mar 19 · MLB Trade Rumors Red Sox Royals Adalberto Mondesi Josh TaylorBrayan Bello Making Spring Debut Sunday
Boston Red Sox right-hander Brayan Bello (forearm) will toss a couple innings in a Grapefruit League game on Sunday for his spring debut. He will follow Nick Pivetta in the outing for Boston. The 23-year-old threw two innings on the back fields in spring training on Wednesday and is now ready to make his spring debut in a game. Even if Bello doesn't have any setbacks over the next couple of weeks, he's not expected to be ready to start the 2023 regular season in the Red Sox's starting rotation. The hard-throwing right-hander has plenty of maturing to do and will need to display better control to have consistent success in the big leagues, but his upside is intriguing in deep mixed and AL-only leagues if he's able to stick in Boston's rotation all year.

James Paxton Throws Bullpen Session
Boston Red Sox southpaw James Paxton (hamstring) threw 25 pitches in a bullpen session on Saturday. Paxton is recovering from a right hamstring strain that he sustained in his first spring training start on March 3rd. He is expected to throw one more session along with two live BPs before pitching in a game. With the pace that he's on, Paxton will likely begin the season on the injured list. The 34-year-old missed the entire 2022 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery and anticipates making a comeback in 2023. He last pitched a full season in 2019 with the New York Yankees and composed a 3.82 ERA across 29 starts. Evidently, Paxton has had a bumpy past few seasons but the Red Sox are hoping to reinvigorate the success that he had just a few seasons ago.

Red Sox Notes: Rodriguez, Paxton, Meneses
Red Sox reliever Joely Rodriguez left today’s game with what the team described as right torso pain. The discomfort was visible, as The Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham (Twitter link) described Rodriguez as “groaning in pain as he went to the clubhouse and was holding onto his side.” The somewhat vague wording of the club’s official…
Mar 18 · MLB Trade Rumors Red Sox Joey Meneses James Paxton Joely RodriguezJustin Turner Could Return To Game Action Monday
Boston Red Sox third baseman/designated hitter Justin Turner (face) is hitting on the field on Friday and could play in a Grapefruit League game on Monday if all goes well with his hitting session. Turner required 16 stitches after getting hit by a pitch in the face early last week in a spring game, but he's progressed ahead of schedule and should be ready for Opening Day in late March at this point. The 38-year-old veteran will be an everyday player in 2023 in his first year in Boston between regular designated hitter duties and occasional starts at both third and first base. His peak power days at the plate are likely over, but Turner can still provide modest counting stats at Fenway Park while getting on base at a useful clip.

Latest On The Red Sox' Rotation
The Red Sox’ rotation will likely be down several starters to begin the season, as MassLive.com’s Chris Cotillo writes that each of Garrett Whitlock, Brayan Bello and James Paxton are expected to begin the season on the injured list. Paxton had already been trending in this direction, but Whitlock and Bello now join him in…

Boston Red Sox right-hander Garrett Whitlock (hip) looked good in his Grapefruit League debut on Wednesday against the Tampa Bay Rays, tossing two hitless and scoreless innings while walking one and striking out three. The 26-year-old is making the transition to a full-time starting role this year for Boston, but he has been behind the other pitchers in camp after having hip surgery in the offseason. He will not be ready to take his first turn through the rotation to begin the year, but he should be ready by the middle of April. Fantasy managers shouldn't expect Whitlock to be as dominant as he was in relief, but he should stick in the rotation all year long as long as he stays healthy.

Justin Turner To Take Batting Practice Friday
Boston Red Sox third baseman/designated hitter Justin Turner (face) is scheduled to take batting practice on Friday. Turner is ahead of schedule while needing 16 stitches after taking a pitch to the face in spring action early last week, and he could be cleared to return to Grapefruit League games if all goes well with his hitting session on Friday. The 38-year-old should open the 2023 regular season as Boston's primary designated hitter while also filling in at first and third base. Turner is no longer in his prime, but he still has excellent plate discipline and can provide modest counting stats for fantasy managers in a corner infield or DH spot in deep mixed leagues.

Corey Kluber Named Opening Day Starter
Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that right-hander Corey Kluber will be the team's Opening Day starter against the Baltimore Orioles on March 30. Cora said that he informed Kluber of the decision back in January. With left-hander Chris Sale (wrist) recovering from injuries that cut his season short once again in 2022, the BoSox will go with the 36-year-old Kluber to kick things off this year. Kluber has bounced around the league in recent seasons and isn't the same pitcher that made three straight All-Star appearances from 2016-18 with the Cleveland Guardians. The two-time Cy Young winner is now an injury risk for fantasy managers and had a below-average strikeout rate in 2022.

Bobby Dalbec Starts At Shortstop Tuesday
Boston Red Sox corner infielder Bobby Dalbec started at shortstop in Tuesday's Grapefruit game against the Tigers. Manager Alex Cora said of the 27-year-old. "I think he's a plus defender. The more we can expose him at short, second if we have a chance, we'll do that." Dalbec struggled in 2022, slashing just .215/.283/.369 with 12 home runs and 39 RBI in 353 plate appearances. He is off to a hot start this spring, but he currently is on the outside looking in for a starting role in the infield. His power potential is still there, and if he can provide defensive value at a number of positions, he may be able to work his way into the lineup. Until then, fantasy managers will have to pass on Dalbec.

Bryan Mata Optioned To Minors
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Bryan Mata has been optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Sunday. The 23-year-old looked fantastic during Grapefruit action this spring. He threw seven scoreless innings with a 1.00 WHIP and six strikeouts. The right-hander made his return to the mound last season after a lengthy absence due to Tommy John surgery. He posted a 2.49 ERA with 105 strikeouts and only five home runs allowed in 19 games (18 starts) between Double-A and Triple-A last season. It appears Mata is getting extremely close to making his big league debut. The expectation is that Mata will take the mound for the Red Sox at some point in 2023.

Garrett Whitlock, Brayan Bello Face Live Hitters
Boston Red Sox pitchers Garrett Whitlock (hip) and Brayan Bello (forearm) both threw to live hitters on Saturday in camp. Whitlock showed no ill-effects from right hip surgery he had last September when he threw two string innings (46 pitches). His next step will be his Grapefruit League debut against the Rays on Wednesday. Bello tossed 17 pitches in his first live action against hitters, and he will throw two more innings of live batting practice on Wednesday. Bello is scheduled to make his first spring start around March 19 or 20. Whitlock has an outside chance to be ready for the start of the season, but if not, he'll likely only miss a start or two. Bello is certain to start the year on the injured list, but he should be back at some point in April.

John Schreiber Fans Two In Saturday's Outing
Boston Red Sox relief pitcher John Schreiber walked none and struck out two in 1 2/3 scoreless and hitless innings in his Grapefruit League outing on Saturday against the Minnesota Twins. The 29-year-old right-hander faced five batters in his most recent spring outing. In his second season in Boston last year, Schreiber had a career-best 2.22 ERA (2.50 FIP), 0.98 WHIP, 22 holds his first eight career saves and a career-high 74 strikeouts in 65 innings over 64 relief appearances. He's not in line for regular save chances with Kenley Jansen in town, but Schreiber should be plenty relevant in leagues that reward points for holds.

Justin Turner Could Resume Baseball Activities Monday
Boston Red Sox third baseman/designated hitter Justin Turner (face), who had his stitches removed this weekend, could resume baseball activities on Monday. Turner was hit in the face by a pitch in a Grapefruit League game last Monday and needed 16 stitches after being taken to a local hospital. He's been feeling good and is expected to serve as the BoSox's primary designated hitter while occasionally filling in at first base for Triston Casas and at third base for Rafael Devers. The 38-year-old joined the Red Sox on a one-year deal that guarantees him $15 million after nine strong seasons with the Dodgers. Turner is no longer in his prime, but when healthy, he can still be a decent source for on-base percentage and counting stats.

Chris Sale Won't Start On Opening Day
Boston Red Sox left-hander Chris Sale (wrist) won't start on Opening Day, which manager Alex Cora said was the plan all along. Cora also said there is "a good chance" that Corey Kluber will get the nod to kick off the 2023 regular season. Sale is one day after Kluber in the spring training rotation, so he's likely to get the ball in the second game of the regular season. The 33-year-old southpaw has been one of the most injured pitchers over the last few years, only making 11 starts (48 1/3 innings) over the last three seasons combined in Boston. The seven-time All-Star can still generate plenty of swings and misses when he's healthy, but the risk of injury has certainly made him less attractive to fantasy managers.

Boston Red Sox third baseman/designated hitter Justin Turner (face) is making big improvements and could take batting practice on Sunday while also getting his stitches removed. Turner was hit in the face by a pitch in a Grapefruit League game earlier this week, and he wasn't expected to have his stitches removed for another couple of weeks. If he can resume swinging a bat on Sunday, it would be great news for his chances of avoiding a trip to the injured list to begin his first season in Beantown. The 38-year-old still has excellent plate discipline and can contribute decent counting stats, but he's an injury risk for fantasy managers and also saw a steep drop in his power numbers in 2022 in his final season with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Justin Turner Has A Shot To Be Ready For Opening Day
Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora said the team is "shooting" for Opening Day with third baseman/designated hitter Justin Turner (face). Turner was hit in the face by a pitch during Grapefruit League play and required stitches. He will not return to on-field workouts in camp until he has his stitches removed, which isn't expected to happen for another two weeks. Still, the 38-year-old could be good to go when the 2023 regular season kicks off as Boston's primary designated hitter. Don't expect Turner to put up numbers like he did in his prime with the Los Angeles Dodgers, especially in the power department, but his excellent plate discipline should still make him useful in on-base percentage leagues.

Adalberto Mondesi Works Out Wednesday
Boston Red Sox shortstop Adalberto Mondesi (knee) had a good day at spring training on Wednesday while hitting and taking ground balls. Mondesi is expected to increase his workload in the coming days in camp, but he's still not expected to be ready for Opening Day at the end of March. The 27-year-old could bump Enrique Hernandez back to the outfield when he's fully healthy. Mondesi entered the league with plenty of potential from a speed perspective, but injuries have hurt him recently. He suffered a torn ACL in 2022 and played in only 15 games for the Kansas City Royals. It's also possible that he could form a platoon with Hernandez at short when he's ready, which would limit his fantasy appeal in deeper leagues.

James Paxton Hopes To Get On A Mound By End Of Week
Boston Red Sox left-hander James Paxton (hamstring) played catch on Wednesday in camp and is hoping to get back on a mound by the end of this week. In his Grapefruit League debut last Friday, Paxton suffered a Grade 1 right hamstring strain, which is expected to cause him to miss Opening Day. The 34-year-old starting pitcher missed all of the 2022 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, and he's only made six starts (21 2/3 innings) over the last three seasons with the New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners due to injuries. This guy just can't stay healthy, so it makes him extremely hard to trust in fantasy.

Brayan Bello, Garrett Whitlock To Throw Live BP Saturday
Boston Red Sox pitchers Brayan Bello (forearm) and Garrett Whitlock (hip) will throw live batting practice sessions in spring training on Saturday, according to manager Alex Cora. The Red Sox are taking it slow with Bello after he started having soreness in his right forearm in mid-February. The 23-year-old has a bright future in Boston, but he could be slightly delayed for the start of the 2023 regular season. Meanwhile, Whitlock's Opening Day status is in doubt, but like Bello, he might not need to miss much time to open the regular season, barring any further setbacks with hip. The 26-year-old has been more dominant for the BoSox out of the bullpen, but he could have a higher fantasy ceiling if used in Boston's rotation this year.

Justin Turner Could Miss Two Weeks
Boston Red Sox third baseman/designated hitter Justin Turner (face) will get the stitches out of his face in around two weeks, so it's too early to say if he'll be ready for Opening Day. Turner was hit by a pitch in Grapefruit League play earlier this week, but even if he's not ready for the start of the regular season, the 38-year-old veteran probably won't miss too much time. Turner is expected to serve as Boston's primary designated hitter in his first year with the team after spending the last nine years of his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He's nearing the end of his career and his power took a big dip in 2022, but Turner still has excellent plate discipline and can provide decent counting stats if he can stay healthy.

Triston Casas Stays Hot At The Plate This Spring
Boston Red Sox first base prospect Triston Casas continued to hit in Tuesday's 10-2 Grapefruit League win over the Braves. The 23-year-old went 2-for-3 with a single, a double, an RBI, a walk and a strikeout. He is now batting .444 with two home runs in 18 spring at-bats. Casas is Boston's top-ranked prospect and enters the 2023 season poised to be their everyday first baseman. He only slashed .197/.358/.408 in his first 95 plate appearances with the Red Sox last season, but he slashed an impressive .273/.382/.481 with 11 home runs and 38 RBI in 317 plate appearances with Triple-A Worcester. Casas remains a top fantasy name in dynasty leagues and also could prove to be a useful pick this season in mixed leagues if he can tap into his power potential.

Tanner Houck Earns Win Tuesday
Boston Red Sox pitcher Tanner Houck picked up the win in Tuesday's 10-2 Grapefruit League win over the Braves. Making his second start of the spring, Houck pitched three innings and faced a number of the Braves' starting bats, allowing two runs on three hits (including a two-run home run) and two walks with four strikeouts. The 26-year-old has turned in strong results as both a starter and reliever in his career, compiling a 3.02 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 27.6% strikeout rate in 146 innings. He is competing for a spot in the Red Sox's starting rotation currently, and despite the diminished offense backing him, his strikeout upside would make him worth a late-round look if he earns a spot.

Justin Turner Released From The Hospital
Boston Red Sox third baseman Justin Turner (face) has been released from the hospital. The 38-year-old was hit in the face by a pitch during Monday's Grapefruit contest against the Detroit Tigers. He was helped off the field with a trainer and taken to a nearby hospital. Luckily, Turner doesn't appear to be dealing with any serious injuries. All the tests came back clean and Turner isn't dealing with a concussion or any fractures. However, he did receive 16 stitches in his face, but is safely home now. The organization has not given an update on how long Turner is going to be sidelined. Fantasy managers will have to check back for another update on his status.

Chris Sale Goes Two Scoreless Innings In Spring Debut
Boston Red Sox left-hander Chris Sale (wrist) allowed two hits and struck out two in two scoreless innings in his Grapefruit League debut against the Detroit Tigers on Monday. It was a nice spring debut for the 33-year-old starting pitcher. He is healthy in camp, but the Red Sox were bringing him along slowly after he made just two starts in 2022 due to various injuries, including a fractured wrist that required surgery. There's potential for Sale to return to ace status for fantasy managers, but it's hard to get past his injuries in recent seasons. He's made only 11 starts (48 1/3 innings) over the last three years for the Red Sox. RotoBaller currently has Sale ranked as the No. 48 fantasy starter.

Justin Turner Hit In Face By Pitch Monday
Boston Red Sox third baseman/designated hitter Justin Turner (face) was hit in the face by a pitch from Detroit Tigers pitcher Matt Manning in Grapefruit League play on Monday. Turner was immediately gushing blood while going down onto the dirt, but he was able to stand up and walk off the field while being escorted by a trainer. The 38-year-old veteran was then taken to a local hospital. Check back for further updates on Turner's condition and for a potential return date. Depending on exactly what damage the ball did to his face, Turner could be in danger of missing Opening Day now. Turner should mostly serve as Boston's designated hitter in his first year in Beantown. The two-time All-Star's power is fading, but he still hit a useful .278/.350/.438 with a .788 OPS, 13 home runs, 81 RBI and 61 runs in 128 games last year for the Dodgers.

Joely Rodriguez To Pitch This Week
Boston Red Sox left-hander Joely Rodriguez (shoulder) will pitch in a Grapefruit League game this week. Rodriguez isn't behind in camp, he's just being careful after having shoulder surgery in the offseason. The 31-year-old southpaw reliever had a 4.47 ERA (3.23 FIP), 1.35 WHIP and career-high 57 strikeouts in 50 1/3 relief innings over 55 appearances in 2022 for the New York Mets. If healthy, he's likely to serve in a middle-relief role for Boston this year. Fantasy managers can most likely ignore him for the time being. In his five major-league seasons, Rodriguez has a 4.56 ERA (3.65 FIP), 1.48 WHIP, one save and a 22.5 percent strikeout rate in 146 relief innings for the Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, Texas Rangers and New York Yankees.

Wilyer Abreu Likely To Miss Time
Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu (hamstring) is expected to miss some time after suffering an injury during Sunday's Spring Training contest. The 23-year-old left early due to a left hamstring strain, but the severity of the injury is unknown right now. Manager Alex Cora mentioned he believes Abreu is going to be sidelined for a while. Abreu was a long shot to make the roster anyway, but this issue will likely delay his minor league season. Possibly, Abreu makes some noise in Boston later in the season, but is mainly only worth rostering in dynasty formats.
