  • Xander Bogaerts Completes Four-Hit Game Friday

Boston Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts went 4-for-5 on Friday, helping his club win 7-4 against the Kansas City Royals. Each hit was a single, and he scored and drove in a run. Bogaerts hasn't provided much power to the Red Sox lineup, with just nine home runs on the season after hitting 90 from 2018-2021. He's still having a great offensive season, slashing .315/.388/.459 with 47 RBI, 59 runs, and seven stolen bases. The native of Aruba will continue to be one of the best hitting shortstops, even if fantasy managers were hoping for more home runs.

  • Enrique Hernandez Could Begin Rehab Assignment Soon

Boston Red Sox skipper Alex Cora said that outfielder Enrique Hernandez (hip) has "felt great" since resuming swinging a bat, and he's made steady progress ever since he got a platelet-rich plasma injection the weekend before the All-Star break. "We'll see [Aug. 9] where he is," Cora said, adding that plans could be in the works soon for a minor league rehab assignment. The 30-year-old has been sidelined with a right hip-flexor strain and is expected to return in mid-to-late August. Outfield prospect Jarren Duran has mostly been playing center field with Hernandez sidelined, but Hernandez should at least return to semi-regular playing time for Boston once he's ready to return. He was hitting .209/.273/.340 with four home runs, 24 RBI and 27 runs scored in 215 at-bats before his injury.

  • Chris Sale Resumes Playing Catch

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Chris Sale (finger) has started playing catch again, according to manager Alex Cora. However, the Red Sox haven't given a timetable for his return after having surgery on July 18, which was described as an "open reduction and internal fixation of a left fifth finger proximal phalarix fracture." Sale broke his left pinkie finger on a line drive against the division-rival New York Yankees in just his second start of the year on July 17. The 33-year-old southpaw got a late start to the 2022 season due to injured ribs, and now fantasy managers will have to wait for him again in what has been another lost season due to injuries. Sale is worth stashing in all fantasy leagues, but it remains to be seen how much he'll help down the stretch.

  • Enrique Hernandez Not Close To Game Action

Boston Red Sox infielder/outfielder Enrique Hernandez (hip) will take batting practice on Friday but isn't close to game action. He has been sidelined since June 7 due to an injured hip. The 30-year-old won't be ready to return until late August at the earliest. He slashed .209/.273/.340 with four home runs, 24 RBI, and 27 runs over 238 plate appearances before landing on the injured list. Hernandez is progressing in his recovery, but a better timeline for his return will be set once he begins a rehab assignment.

  • Michael Wacha Strikes Out Eight In Thursday's Rehab Start

Boston Red Sox pitcher Michael Wacha (shoulder) struck out eight across 4 2/3 scoreless innings with Triple-A Worcester on Thursday. He didn't allow a hit and threw 63 pitches in his first rehab start. The 31-year-old had been sidelined with right shoulder inflammation since the beginning of July. He owns a 2.69 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, and a 50:22 K: BB across 70 1/3 innings in 2022. Wacha is expected to have another rehab in Triple-A Worcester start before returning to Boston. Fantasy managers with an open IL spot should continue to stash Wacha in most league formats.

  • Red Sox Place Brayan Bello On Injured List, Activate Matt Barnes

The Red Sox have placed right-hander Brayan Bello on the 15-day injured list due to a left groin strain. Boston also optioned righty Kaleb Ort to Triple-A Worcester, with recently-acquired first baseman Eric Hosmer and relievers Matt Barnes and Darwinzon Hernández taking the active roster spots. • Red Sox Designate Jackie Bradley Jr. For Assignment

The Boston Red Sox designated outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. for assignment on Thursday. The writing was on the wall for Bradley, who is hitting just .210/.257/.321 with three home runs, 29 RBI, 21 runs scored and two stolen bases in 271 at-bats this year, when the Red Sox traded for outfielder Tommy Pham at the deadline on Tuesday. If the 32-year-old isn't scooped up off waivers by another team, he'll return to the organization and head to the minor leagues at Triple-A Worcester. He's still useful for his glove work in the outfield, but Bradley's bat has been useless to the Red Sox and fantasy managers in 2022.

  • James Paxton Throws Simulated Game On Wednesday

Boston Red Sox pitcher James Paxton (elbow) threw two innings during a simulated game Wednesday. It was the first time the southpaw faced live hitters this year. He is expected to return in mid-August and will continue to build his arm up in upcoming rehab appearances. The 33-year-old underwent Tommy John surgery in April and has been limited to just 21 2/3 innings over the last two years. The 33-year-old had his best season in 2019, posting a 15-6 record with a 3.82 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, and 186 strikeouts over 150 2/3 innings for the Yankees in 2019. Fantasy managers in deep-league formats with an open spot on the injured list can stash Paxton.

  • Brayan Bello Injured Wednesday

Boston Red Sox rookie right-hander Brayan Bello (groin) left his outing on Wednesday against the Houston Astros with a left groin strain. Bello was trying to eat up some innings after lefty starter Rich Hill made his return from the injured list on Wednesday, but Bello was forced out after just two-thirds of an inning pitched. There's a good chance that the 23-year-old will require a trip to the injured list, but stay tuned for more details on his injury. Bello was making just his fifth major league appearance in Wednesday's game, and he entered the contest having allowed a whopping 16 earned runs on 26 hits while walking 11 and striking out 13 in 16 1/3 innings pitched in four outings (three starts).

  • Rich Hill Starting Wednesday Against Astros

Boston Red Sox left-hander Rich Hill (knee) will start Wednesday's game against the Houston Astros instead of Brayan Bello. Hill was activated from the 15-day injured list on Monday, and he'll return to the starting rotation in a tough matchup against the first-place Astros. The 42-year-old veteran southpaw only threw three innings and 56 pitches in his only minor league rehab start, so fantasy managers shouldn't expect him to have a long leash in this one. The matchup alone should scare fantasy managers off. In 15 starts before his injury, Hill had gone 4-4 with a 4.20 ERA (4.05 FIP), a 1.29 WHIP and a 58:23 K:BB over 70 2/3 innings pitched. He's not a bad pickup in deeper leagues for rotation depth if he's available on the waiver wire.

  • J.D. Martinez Not Starting Against Astros

Boston Red Sox designated hitter J.D. Martinez is not in the starting lineup on Wednesday against the Houston Astros. After not being dealt at Tuesday's trade deadline, the right-handed slugger will take a normal day off. Martinez is hitting .284 on the season with nine home runs, 40 RBI and 52 runs scored, but he's been cold since the All-Star break, going 3-for-30 (.100) with no homers, two RBI and eight strikeouts in eight games. His fantasy managers will be hoping that an off day on Wednesday can get him going again. Rafael Devers, who just returned from the injured list on Tuesday, will serve as the DH and bat third on Wednesday against Astros right-hander Jose Urquidy, with Christian Arroyo manning third and batting sixth.

  • Tanner Houck Notches Eighth Save Of Season Tuesday

Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Tanner Houck picked up his eighth save of the season in Tuesday's 2-1 win over the Astros. Houck came on to end the game with a one-run lead and delivered a 1-2-3 inning with no strikeouts. It was his second consecutive save and he now has a 3.15 ERA with just one blown save this season. The Red Sox have used a number of relief pitchers in save situations this season, but Houck appears to be the arm to roster in fantasy for the time being.

  • Rafael Devers Reinstated From The Injured List

Boston Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers (hamstring) was activated from the 10-day injured list Tuesday. He has been sidelined since July 23 with a hamstring injury. The 27-year-old was in the lineup for Tuesday's game against Houston, batting third in the order and starting at third base. He is slashing .324/.379/.602 with 22 home runs, 55 RBI, 62 runs, and two stolen bases in 87 games in 2022. Devers has been one of the most consistent hitters in the league and should give fantasy managers a vast boost in the second half of the season now that he's been reinstated from the IL.

  • Red Sox Acquire Eric Hosmer From Padres

San Diego Padres first baseman Eric Hosmer has reportedly been traded to the Boston Red Sox, per the San Diego Union-Tribune's Jeff Sanders, who tweeted on Tuesday that Hosmer "is heading to Boston, per team source." The veteran previously hit .272 with a .336 on-base percentage and eight home runs in 369 plate appearances for the Padres this year. So far this season, Boston has primarily utilized Bobby Dalbec and Franchy Cordero at first base.

The Chicago White Sox are acquiring left-hander Jake Diekman from the Boston Red Sox. Diekman will head to Chicago to help solidify the bullpen while the White Sox send catcher Reese McGuire to Boston in exchange. The 35-year-old Diekman has been solid out of the pen for the Red Sox in 2022, posting a 5-1 record, 4.23 ERA, 1.49 WHIP, one save, 12 holds, and 51 strikeouts in 38 1/3 innings of work. • Christian Vazquez Heading To Astros

The Houston Astros are finalizing a deal to acquire catcher Christian Vazquez from the Boston Red Sox on Monday, according to sources. The Red Sox are playing in Houston on Monday night, so Vazquez will just be switching club houses. Vazquez will serve as Houston's primary backstop the rest of the way, with Martin Maldonado and Korey Lee serving as insurance. The Astros also traded for veteran first baseman/outfielder Trey Mancini on Monday. Vazquez has been one of Boston's lone bright spots in a tough season, as he was hitting .282/.327/.432 with eight home runs, 42 RBI, 33 runs scored and a stolen bases in 318 plate appearances over 84 games. He'll receive a slight fantasy boost while heading to the Astros lineup.

  • Christian Arroyo Reaches Four Times Sunday

Boston Red Sox utility man Christian Arroyo reached base four times Sunday, going 2-for-2 with a double, two walks, and a run scored in a 7-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. Arroyo has only played in seven games in July after missing time with injury, but he has made the most of his opportunities, slashing .458/.536/.625 in 28 plate appearances. He currently doesn't play enough to be worth adding to fantasy rosters, but that could change if Chaim Bloom decides to move on from any regulars at the trade deadline.

  • Rich Hill Lined Up To Start On Wednesday

Boston Red Sox left-hander Rich Hill (knee) is expected to be activated from the 15-day injured list in order to start on Wednesday against the Houston Astros. Nathan Eovaldi and Kutter Crawford will start the first two games of the series on Monday and Tuesday, respectively. Hill, 42, went only three innings and 56 pitches in his only minor league rehab start for Double-A Portland last week, so fantasy managers shouldn't expect him to have a long leash in his first start back this week against a tough opponent in the first-place Astros. Before his injury, Hill had a 4.20 ERA and 1.29 WHIP with 58 strikeouts and 23 walks in 70 2/3 innings over 15 starts. There isn't a ton of fantasy upside left in his left arm.

  • Astros Focusing On Christian Vazquez

The Houston Astros, who are seeking a catcher at this year's trade deadline, are among several teams reporting a high price on Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras. As a result, they are focusing more on Boston Red Sox catcher Christian Vazquez, according to one source. While Martin Maldonado is solid defensively for the Astros, they definitely are seeking an offensive upgrade at the position. Vazquez, 31, is having a great year at the plate and is currently slashing .282/.327/.432 with eight home runs, 42 RBI, 33 runs scored and a stolen base in 318 plate appearances and 84 games for the BoSox.

  • Trevor Story Diagnosed With Hairline Fracture

Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story (wrist) has a small hairline fracture near his wrist and will be shut down for 10-to-14 days. He was initially diagnosed with a bruised hand after being placed on the injured list on July 16. A second opinion from a hand specialist revealed that Story suffered the fracture when he was hit in his right hand by a pitch on July 12. The 29-year-old slashed .221/.289/.423 with 15 home runs, 10 stolen bases, 58 RBI, and 49 runs before landing on the IL. Story most likely won't return until mid-August. Christian Arroyo will handle second base duties for the Red Sox while Story is sidelined.

  • J.D. Martinez, Nathan Eovaldi, Christian Vazquez Could Be Traded

Boston Red Sox outfielder J.D. Martinez, catcher Christian Vazquez, and pitcher Nathan Eovaldi could be moved by the trade deadline. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Martinez, Vazquez, and Eovaldi are all free agents to be and among the candidates to be traded. It remains to be seen where they will be traded; with Boston at a 50-52 record, the Red Sox will likely be sellers at the deadline. Martinez and Vasquez shouldn't take much of a hit in fantasy if moved, while Eovaldi could earn chances for more wins by moving to a playoff contender. Stay tuned.

  • Mets Looking Into J.D. Martinez And Christian Vazquez

The New York Mets have scouts attending the Boston Red Sox's Friday night affair against the Milwaukee Brewers, according to Ken Rosenthal. They are mainly there to see Red Sox outfielder J.D. Martinez and catcher Christian Vazquez. The Mets have been involved in rumors circulating around Chicago Cubs relief pitcher David Robertson and catcher Willson Contreras, but according to Rosenthal, they could pivot to a trade with the Red Sox if the Cubs price is too steep. If this is what ends up happening, expect the Mets to look for another deal to address their bullpen. If the trade does end up happening, the value of Martinez and Vasquez might see a slight boost in fantasy when lineup context is taken into account, but nothing too major.

Devers has been sidelined since July 22 due to a right hamstring injury. The 25-year-old has been one of the most consistently dominant hitters in the majors this year. However, it's certainly concerning that he still has pain. Story has had a rough first year with the Red Sox. Over 81 games, he's slashed .221/.289/.423 with 15 home runs, 10 stolen bases, 58 RBI and 49 runs. His return timeline remains unclear as of now.

Dalbec is now hitting .206/.279/.370 with 10 home runs, 28 RBI, 29 runs scored and two stolen bases in 272 plate appearances over 89 games for the Red Sox this year. The 27-year-old has plenty of power to spare and has hit half of his 10 home runs in the month of July while driving in 10 runs in 19 games, but there's too much swing and miss to his game to provide fantasy managers with a reliable batting average right now.

He has been one of the few bright spots for the Red Sox this season, slashing .324/.379/.602 with 22 home runs, 55 RBI, 62 runs scored, and two stolen bases over 380 plate appearances. Devers will most likely go on a rehab assignment this weekend, and fantasy managers could have the star Red Sox third baseman in their lineups sometime next week.

  • Triston Casas Could Still Help Out Boston In 2022

Boston Red Sox top prospect Triston Casas (ankle) could still help out at first baseman could the call to the big leagues this season. The 22-year-old first baseman has been out since mid-May with a high ankle sprain. Despite having a lengthy absence on the injured list, Casas could help out at first base for the Red Sox this season. Red Sox Chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said he "wouldn't rule it out. I think it's possible. Obviously, the injury, what that did to him in terms of just opportunity. We were looking forward to him just having a consistent year." Casas is slashing .234/.343/.421/.764 line, six homers, nine doubles, 23 RBIs, and 25 runs in 40 games for Worcester this season. Fantasy managers searching for power can stash Casas in most league formats if they have room on their roster.

  • Christian Arroyo, Rich Hill Starting Rehab Assignments

Boston Red Sox infielder/outfielder Christian Arroyo (groin) will "most likely" start a minor league rehab assignment for Double-A Portland on Wednesday, according to manager Alex Cora. Left-hander Rich Hill (knee) will make a rehab start for Portland on Wednesday. Arroyo faced Hill during the southpaw's three-inning simulated game last Friday. Arroyo has limited fantasy value as a utility player for Boston who is hitting .224/.278/.362 with four homers, 13 RBI and three stolen bases in 2022. Hill has been out since July 2, but he could be cleared to return to Boston after one or two rehab starts. Barnes has a rough 7.94 ERA, 5.30 FIP and 1.71 WHIP in 17 innings for the Red Sox this year and will likely be eased into low-leverage innings out of the bullpen when he returns. • J.D. Martinez Reportedly Available In Trade Market

The Boston Red Sox have dropped four of five games since the All-Star break and are currently sitting in last place in the AL East at 49-49. With each loss, it's looking more and more likely that the team could be a seller at the trade deadline. On his Baseball Tonight podcast on Tuesday, Buster Olney stated that Red Sox outfielder J.D. Martinez "is out in the trade market." The 34-year-old is set to be an unrestricted free agent after this year, so it would certainly make sense for the club to move him if they weren't feeling confident in their playoff chances. The Red Sox have lost eight of their last 10 games and might become sellers rather than buyers as the Aug. 2 trade deadline rapidly approaches. However, they are still unlikely to trade two of their best players in Bogaerts and Devers. Bogaerts is expected to opt out of his deal after this season and test the free-agent market, so of the two, he'd make more sense to be traded this summer. Devers isn't eligible to become a free agent until 2024, and he also just landed on the injured list last Saturday with right hamstring inflammation.

It sounds as though the 29-year-old is still a little ways away from joining the team, but he is progressing in the right direction. The batting average hasn't been there for Story, but he has still been a valuable fantasy asset overall with a.221/.289/.423 slash line, 15 home runs, 58 RBI, and 10 stolen bases. • Trevor Story Resumes Swinging On Sunday

Boston Red Sox second baseman Trevor Story (hand) took some swings on Sunday. It was the first time he'd swung the bat since landing on the injured list a few weeks back. Story is dealing with a a right hand contusion. The injury occurred after he was hit in his right hand by a pitch. Red Sox manager Alex Cora stated on Sunday that Story was "trending in the right direction." It's unclear whether or not he'll require a rehab stint before he's activated from the injured list, but either way he remains at least a few days away from returning.

  • Alex Verdugo Starting To Step It Up

Boston Red Sox outfielder Alex Verdugo went 2-for-4 in the 4-1 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday. The outfielder had a poor first half of the season. He went into the All-Star break with a .262/.306/.372 slash line with six homers, 48 RBI, 22 walks and 38 strikeouts. These aren't terrible numbers, but Boston needs way more out of him. He's not known for his power, so if he can't get his average up, standard fantasy league managers might want to consider a replacement.

  • Rafael Devers Placed On Injured List

Boston Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers (hamstring) was placed on the 10-day IL Saturday after tweaking his right hamstring in Friday's loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. The injuries keep piling up for the Red Sox, who are already without Trevor Story, J.D. Martinez, and Kike Hernandez this weekend. Devers, who has played at a near-MVP level this season, has a 1.052 OPS with 49 runs, 46 RBI, and 19 homers since May 1st. Needless to say, this is a tough loss for fantasy managers. Hopefully, Devers stay on the IL is short-lived, but the timeline isn't known yet.

  • Rafael Devers Could Head To The Injured List

Boston Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers (hamstring), who is absent from the lineup on Saturday, could be headed to the injured list, per beat writer Julian McWilliams. The 25-year-old All-Star tweaked his right hamstring in Friday's lopsided loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. The Red Sox will likely hold him out for the remainder of the series before they decide to place him on the injured list or not. Either way, it's not encouraging news for Boston or fantasy managers alike. Devers is one of the best hitters in all of baseball, slashing .324/.379/.602 with 22 home runs, 55 RBI and two stolen bases in 349 at-bats this season. He should be considered day-to-day for the time being, but fantasy managers need to prepare for the worst in the meantime.

  • Brayan Bello Likely To Start Sunday

Boston Red Sox top pitching prospect Brayan Bello, who was recalled from the minors on Friday, is the leading candidate to start on Sunday against the Toronto Blue Jays. Bello struggled in his first two major league starts, allowing nine earned runs on 13 hits while walking six and striking out seven in eight innings against the Tampa Bay Rays. The 23-year-old Dominican right-hander has been much better between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester in the minors, though, posting a 2.35 ERA in 16 outings (15 starts) with 118 strikeouts and 34 walks in 88 innings pitched. The team's No. 3 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, is worth picking up in deeper leagues if he sticks in Boston's rotation, but he'll be a shaky streamer in just his third MLB start Sunday.

  • Rafael Devers Not In The Starting Lineup

Boston Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers is not in the starting lineup on Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays. Devers will take a seat after going 1-for-3 with a double and a strikeout in the embarrassing blowout loss to the Blue Jays to kick off the second half of the season on Friday. The 25-year-old Dominican is one of the best all-around hitters in baseball, as he's slashing .324/.379/.602 with a .981 OPS, 22 home runs, 55 RBI, 62 runs scored and two stolen bases in 349 at-bats this year. His 113 hits lead off of baseball. Rookie Jeter Downs will start at the hot corner and bat ninth on Saturday against Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah. Downs has struggled in his first 31 big-league plate appearances, going just 5-for-29 (.172) with a homer, four RBI and 15 strikeouts.

  • J.D. Martinez Still Out Saturday

Boston Red Sox outfielder/designated hitter J.D. Martinez (back) remains out of the starting lineup on Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays after he was scratched from Friday's lineup due to back spasms. It's not a good sign that the 34-year-old slugger is already injured coming out of the All-Star break, but fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for now. Martinez is hitting .302/.368/.481 this year with an .849 OPS, nine home runs, 38 RBI and 51 runs scored, so losing him for an extended period of time would hurt the Red Sox and fantasy managers alike. Franchy Cordero is serving as the designated hitter and batting fifth, while Bobby Dalbec starts at first base and is hitting sixth against Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah on Saturday.
