Orioles Move Mike Baumann To Relief
The Orioles are converting right-hander Mike Baumann to a short relief role, manager Brandon Hyde told reporters after today’s Spring Training contest (relayed by Nathan Ruiz of the Baltimore Sun). Baumann worked one inning, the eighth, in today’s game against the Blue Jays. Prospect evaluators have suggested for a few seasons that Baumann might be better…
Mar 17 · MLB Trade Rumors Orioles Michael Baumann closersCedric Mullins Seeing Light Work For Team USA
Baltimore Orioles and Team USA outfielderCedric Mullinshas yet to see many reps in the World Baseball Classic as part of a stacked American roster. Mullins has logged just five at-bats while appearing in three games, going 1-for-5 with an RBI triple and two strikeouts in that time. Mullins' triple came in a 12-1 blowout win over Team Canada on Monday, while he made just one plate appearance in USA's 3-2 triumph over Colombia on Wednesday. The former 13th-round pick hit .214 with a double in 14 Grapefruit League at-bats before departing for the World Baseball Classic. The 28-year-old regressed after an explosive 2021 season, hitting .258 with 16 home runs, 34 stolen bases, and a .721 OPS across 156 appearances for the Orioles in 2021. His wRC+ dropped from 136 in 2021 to 106 in 2022, but he still boasts a combination of power and speed, making him an attractive fantasy asset in his prime on draft day.

Felix Bautista Strikes Out Two In Spring Debut
Baltimore Orioles closer Felix Bautista (knee, shoulder) made his Grapefruit League debut on Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates and looked good, striking out two in his one innings of work. He didn't walk a batter or allow a hit. The 27-year-old right-hander also hit 99 mph on the radar gun, so it appears his arm is fully healthy after being brought along slowly in camp due to knee and shoulder issues. There is plenty of time for Bautista to be ready to go on Opening Day, and he's fully expected to be Baltimore's primary closer again in 2023. Bautista has been dominant in his short time with the O's and has plenty of fantasy appeal for an improving Orioles team.

Heston Kjerstad Continues Torrid Spring Monday
Baltimore Orioles outfielder Heston Kjerstad continued a red-hot spring on Monday with a long solo home run to right field as part of a seven-inning, 6-5 loss to the Atlanta Braves. It was the third long ball of the spring for the 24-year-old, who added a single on the afternoon and is now hitting a robust .478 with a 1.500 OPS across 23 at-bats in Grapefruit League action. Kjerstad's professional debut in 2022 was shortened by a hamstring issue, but he mashed to the tune of a .463 average and 1.201 OPS in 22 Single-A games before being humbled to a .233 average with just three homers and a .674 OPS across 43 High-A contests. The 2020 second overall pick will likely start back at the High-A level as he looks to work his way up the Orioles' minor-league ladder in 2023.

Felix Bautista To Make Spring Debut Tuesday
Baltimore Orioles relief pitcher Felix Bautista will make his spring debut Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates after dealing with knee and shoulder issues this spring. Bautista was hampered by a knee injury late in the 2022 season while he underwent a shoulder strengthening program this spring. The 27-year-old took over closing duties for the Orioles in the second half of 2022, racking up 15 saves to go along with a stout 2.19 ERA and 34.8% strikeout rate across 65 appearances. Expected to be ready for Opening Day, Bautista should be a quality source of saves in 2023 as the Orioles' full-time closer while once again racking up plenty of punchouts as he's done throughout his professional baseball career.

DL Hall Throws Live Session On Sunday
Baltimore Orioles left-hander DL Hall's (back) live batting practice session on Sunday went "extremely well," and he has another one scheduled for Tuesday at spring training. If his session on Tuesday also goes well, the Orioles are hoping to get Hall into a Grapefruit League game. The 24-year-old southpaw is building himself up as a starter, but it remains to be seen if he'll be ready for Opening Day in a starting role. Baltimore has yet to decide whether they want to use Hall in a relief or starting role for the majority of the 2023 season. Hall has great stuff on the mound, but he's been unable to control it consistently. He allowed nine earned runs on 17 hits while walking six and striking out 19 in 13 2/3 innings in his first taste of the majors in 2022.

Felix Bautista, DL Hall To Throw Live BP Next Week
Baltimore Orioles pitchers Felix Bautista (knee, shoulder) and DL Hall (back) are both scheduled to throw live batting practice sessions in camp next week. Hall also threw a side session on Wednesday. The 27-year-old Bautista, who should operate as Baltimore's closer when healthy, is being slowly built up in spring training after complaining of knee and shoulder soreness. If he doesn't suffer any setbacks, Bautista should be ready for the start of the 2023 regular season. Hall, 24, won't be ready for Opening Day due to a lower back injury, but he shouldn't be on the shelf for long to open the year. The Orioles clearly view Hall as a future starter in their rotation, but don't be surprised if he begins the year down on the farm when he's ready to go.

Jordan Westburg Slumping Early In Spring Training
Baltimore Orioles shortstop prospect Jordan Westburg went 1-for-4 with a double on Tuesday versus the Minnesota Twins. Westburg is a consensus Top-100 prospect, but has been off to a slow start in a small sample size this spring. The 24-year-old is just 4-for-18 with two RBI, but it's much too early to question his potential impact in 2023. Westburg has shown plenty of power throughout his minor league with 27 homers and 106 RBI between Double-A and Triple-A in 2022. With fellow shortstop prospect Gunnar Henderson likely to land an Opening Day spot, Westburg may need to switch to second base or third base to see everyday at-bats at the big-league level in 2023. Regardless, Westburg's biggest competition will be infielders Jorge Mateo and Adam Frazier and it might be sooner than later that he forces the Orioles hand, if either player starts slow with the Orioles ready to compete this season. Westburg is a stash in redraft leagues for now, but should be rostered in all dynasty leagues.

Gunnar Henderson Off To Slow Start
Baltimore Orioles shortstop/third base prospect Gunnar Henderson went 0-for-3 with a walk and strikeout on Tuesday versus the Minnesota Twins. Arguably the top prospect in the game right now, Henderson has come out of the gates sluggish this spring with just two hits in his first 13 at-bats. The 21-year-old has flown through the Orioles system and spent the last month of the season in the big leagues where he held his own with a .259 batting average to go along with four homers and 18 RBI in 116 at-bats. Henderson has shown the ability to make adjustments throughout his career and managers shouldn't worry about his slow start this spring yet. Likely to open the season at shortstop or third base, Henderson should be on draft boards in all formats with his ability to hit for power and add speed.

Grayson Rodriguez Continues To Make Case For Rotation Spot
Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher prospect Grayson Rodriguez tossed 2 2/3 innings on Tuesday versus the Minnesota Twins. The big hurler allowed three hits, one run, two walks and recorded four strikeouts on the afternoon. The 23-year-old had a phenomenal 2022 campaign going 6-2 with a 2.62 ERA alongside 109 strikeouts in 75 1/3 innings. With the exception of one outing in High-A and two in Double-A, Rodriguez spent the year in Triple-A. Rodriguez was on the cusp of being called up last season, but suffered a Grade 2 lat strain that sidelined him for most of the second half. Now healthy, Rodriguez is being given every chance to earn a spot in the rotation this spring. Even if he earns a rotation spot, the Orioles could still limit him throughout points of the season, but he will be worth rostering in all formats with his sky high potential and strikeout ability.

Terrin Vavra To Resume Swinging Tuesday
Baltimore Orioles infielder Terrin Vavra (shoulder) said he will swing a bat on Tuesday to test his injured left shoulder. He's been feeling much better and expects to play in Grapefruit League games soon. The 25-year-old has been dealing with left shoulder discomfort since late last week and has taken some time off as a precaution in camp. In his first 40 big-league games in 2022, Vavra hit .258/.340/.337 with a .677 OPS, one home run, 12 RBI and 14 runs scored in 103 plate appearances for the O's. He displays excellent plate discipline, which should allow him to have a strong on-base percentage, but he only has modest speed and very little power at the plate. Vavra also probably won't play every day for Baltimore unless an injury opens up a spot.
