  • Humberto Castellanos To Undergo Tommy John Surgery

Diamondbacks right-hander Humberto Castellanos will undergo Tommy John surgery, manager Torey Lovullo announced (via Steve Gilbert of MLB.com). The 24-year-old is already on the 60-day injured list, having missed the past couple months with an elbow strain. Castellanos’ efforts to avoid going under the knife will prove unsuccessful, and he’ll likely miss all of next season…

  • Mark Melancon Out As Closer, Arizona Going With Committee

Arizona Diamondbacks skipper Torey Lovullo said that the team will go with a closer-by-committee approach moving forward, which means right-hander Mark Melancon and his 4.66 ERA will be demoted from the ninth inning for the foreseeable future. The 37-year-old veteran is also 3-10 with a 1.58 WHIP, 14 saves, 26 strikeouts and 13 walks in 36 2/3 innings pitched this year. He'll likely work in low-leverage situations for the time being, with some combination of veteran Ian Kennedy, Joe Mantiply and Kyle Nelson factoring into the committee approach. Kennedy had the team's most recent save on Tuesday and has a 3.15 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, five saves and 32 K's in 34 1/3 innings this year. He's probably your best bet if you're speculating on saves in Arizona.

  • Diamondbacks Select Tommy Henry

The Diamondbacks announced that they have selected the contract of left-hander Tommy Henry. He is the starter for today’s game, making his major league debut. To make room for him on the 40-man roster, fellow lefty Tyler Gilbert was transferred to the 60-day injured list. Righty Taylor Widener was optioned to make room on the active…

  • Ian Kennedy Earns Fifth Save Of Season Tuesday

Arizona Diamondbacks relief pitcher Ian Kennedy picked up his fifth save of the season in Tuesday's 6-3 win over the Guardians. Kennedy came in to pitch the ninth inning with a 3-run lead and struck out the side to end the game. Mark Melancon has served as the team's primary closer this season, but he pitched 1 2/3 innings in Monday's game. Kennedy has pitched better than Melancon but has had his own struggles, converting only five of eight save opportunities with a 3.15 ERA. Kennedy is worth a look in deeper roto leagues, but it seems that Melancon is still the arm to roster in fantasy for managers chasing saves at this time.

  • Druw Jones To Have Shoulder Surgery

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Druw Jones (shoulder), the No. 2 overall pick in this year's draft, will have surgery to fix his posterial labrum in his left shoulder, according to farm director Josh Barfield. Jones injured his shoulder while taking batting practice in Arizona shortly after the team made him the No. 2 overall pick. The 18-year-old, who is the son of former MLB center fielder Andruw Jones, will miss the rest of the 2022 season. The good news is that he's still young, and the injury is to his non-throwing shoulder, so Jones should be just fine in the long run. He entered this year's draft with one of the best overall hit tools of any prep prospect. Jones will be hoping to gain clearance from his injury before spring training in 2023.

  • Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly Not Going Anywhere

The Arizona Diamondbacks have determined that starting pitchers Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly aren't going anywhere at this year's trade deadline. There has been a little interest in veteran left-hander Madison Bumgarner, but nothing serious yet. Gallen has a no-decision in seven of his last outings, but he's been solid for the D-backs all year, posting a 3.24 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 101:29 K:BB over 105 2/3 innings. Kelly has been even better, going 10-5 with a 2.87 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 104:38 K:BB in 125 1/3 innings in his fourth MLB season. In the month of July, he went 4-0 with a 1.31 ERA, 0.77 WHIP, 33 K's and eight walks in 41 1/3 innings over his six starts. It makes sense why Arizona would want to hang onto both of these starters.

  • Luke Weaver Headed To Kansas City

The Kansas City Royals acquired right-hander Luke Weaver from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for outfielder Emmanuel Rivera on Monday. Weaver has appeared in 12 games for Arizona in 2022, posting a 1-1 record, 7.71 ERA, 1.78 WHIP, and 19 strikeouts over 16 1/3 innings of work. Look for Weaver to try to help bolster the Kansas City bullpen moving forward.

The D-Backs announced they’ve selected reliever Kevin Ginkel onto the major league roster before this evening’s game against the Guardians. They’ve also reinstated starter Zach Davies from the injured list and recalled designated hitter Seth Beer from Triple-A Reno. In a trio of active roster moves, they’ve placed left-hander Caleb Smith on the 15-day IL due to a hand…

  • Jake McCarthy To See Most Of Playing Time In Left Field

With outfielder David Peralta being dealt to the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday, Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Jake McCarthy will get the "lion's share" of the available playing time in left field, according to general manager Mike Hazen. McCarthy has been very productive since returning from Triple-A Reno earlier in the month, going 11-for-35 (.314) with five doubles, three walks and two steals. The 25-year-old should at least be in the starting lineup against right-handed pitchers on a regular basis for the Snakes. In 118 at-bats overall in 2022, he's hitting .263/.315/.432 with three home runs, 12 RBI, 24 runs scored and four stolen bases, making him certainly worth a pickup in deeper leagues.

  • Tampa Bay Rays Acquire David Peralta

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder David Peralta has been traded to the Tampa Bay Rays, according to Jeff Passan. Coming back to the Diamondbacks in the deal is 19-year-old catcher Christian Cerda. Peralta is more of a platoon bat at this point, as he has a pretty good .823 OPS against righties but just a .462 OPS against lefties. The Rays tend to play a very analytical brand of ball, so expect Peralta to see very few lefties. He could be of use in weeks where the Rays are facing mostly righties, but in most leagues this move won't help his fantasy value. Cerda is not a highly ranked prospect, but has put up good numbers in rookie ball this year while showing off his plate discipline. He is still a long way from the majors, though.

  • Keynan Middleton Lands On 15-Day Injured List

The Arizona Diamondbacks placed relief pitcher Keynan Middleton (ankle) on the 15-day injured list due to a right ankle strain on Tuesday. In a corresponding move, the team called up fellow reliever Chris Devenski. Middleton has become quite familiar with the injured list this year as he missed a month and a half earlier this season due to right elbow inflammation. He's performed well when he's been healthy, pitching to a 1.64 ERA and a 0.73 WHIP across 12 appearances.

  • Diamondbacks Select Chris Devenski

The Diamondbacks selected reliever Chris Devenski onto the major league roster shortly before tonight’s game against the Giants. Keynan Middleton was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right ankle strain. Arizona already had a vacancy on the 40-man roster. If he gets into a game, it’ll be the first big league action of the year…

  • Druw Jones Could Miss Rest Of 2022

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Druw Jones (shoulder), who was the No. 2 overall pick in this year's draft, suffered a shoulder injury during his first batting practice session with the team on Monday and might miss the rest of the year. It's unknown if he'll require surgery. Jones is the son of five-time All-Star center fielder Andruw Jones and was considered by many to be the top talent in this year's draft. He signed last week for a slot-value bonus of $8.19 million. D-backs farm director Josh Barfield said "it's too early to say" whether Jones will be ready for the start of spring training in 2023. It's a tough break for the 18-year-old outfielder, but there's no reason to believe this injury will significantly alter his long-term development.

  • Josh Rojas Steals Three Bases Monday

Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Josh Rojas went 2-for-4 out of the leadoff spot on Monday in the team's 7-0 win over the San Francisco Giants. Rojas drove in one, walked and stole three bases on the evening in the victory. It was the 28-year-old's first career multi-steal game, and he now has 11 swipes on the season in 65 games. Rojas is slashing a very respectable .279/.352/.408 with five home runs, 28 RBI and 36 runs scored to go along with the 11 stolen bases in 267 plate appearances for the Snakes. He's been excellent in the month of July, going 24-for-68 (.353) with a homer, 10 RBI, 11 runs scored and six stolen bases.

  • Zac Gallen Allows Just Two Hits

Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen was at the top of his game Friday night, allowing just two hits in seven innings against the Washington Nationals. He did not allow a run or walk a batter, and he struck out seven. Gallen was credited with the win, improving his record to 5-2 on the year. He now has a 3.31 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and 96 strikeouts in 100 2/3 innings across 18 starts on the season.

  • Ketel Marte Homers, Triples Friday

Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte had a big game Friday against the Washington Nationals, going 2-for-4 with a home run, a triple, four RBI, and two runs scored. Marte now has nine home runs, 47 runs scored, 33 RBI, and four steals with a .274/.364/.466 slash line in 336 plate appearances this year. Five of his home runs have come in his last 15 games, a period in which Marte has slugged .740 in 50 at-bats.
