  • David Price Leaning Towards Retirement After 2022 Season

2022 is the final season of the seven-year, $217MM free agent deal that David Price signed with the Red Sox in December 2015, and it has been widely expected that the veteran left-hander will hang up his glove once his contract is up.  Price all but confirmed as much earlier this week when speaking with…

  • Ian Kennedy Lands On Injured List With Calf Inflammation

The Arizona Diamondbacks placed relief pitcher Ian Kennedy (calf) on the 15-day injured list with right calf inflammation on Monday. Fellow right-hander Keynan Middleton was recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding move. Kennedy has been the team's "closer-in-waiting" this year as the next man up behind the team's primary closer, Mark Melancon. Melancon leads the team with 11 saves while Kennedy is next after him with four. This injury makes Melancon's ninth inning job all the more secure despite his 5.47 ERA and 1.56 WHIP. Kennedy hasn't pitched a ton better this year with a 3.58 ERA and a 1.52 WHIP, but he'll still be someone worth keeping on your radar once he returns as he'll likely be a Melancon injury away from taking over ninth inning duties.

  • Craig Kimbrel Day-To-Day With Back Soreness

Los Angeles Dodgers closer Craig Kimbrel (back) was hit hard in his back by a line drive off the bat of San Diego Padres second baseman Jake Cronenworth on Sunday. Kimbrel stated on Monday that his back was sore, but that he thought he'd only need a day or two before being ready to pitch again. The Dodgers are back on the field against the Colorado Rockies on Monday. If a save chance arises on Monday, we're likely to see either Evan Phillips or Brusdar Graterol pitch the ninth. Expect an update on Kimbrel's status ahead of Tuesday's game. He's day-to-day for now.

  • Liam Hendriks, Adam Engel Return From Injured List

The Chicago White Sox reinstated closer Liam Hendriks (forearm) and outfielder Adam Engel (hamstring) from the injured list on Monday and optioned outfielder Adam Haseley and right-hander Jimmy Lambert to Triple-A Charlotte in corresponding moves. Hendriks has a 2.81 ERA and 1.13 WHIP with 16 saves and 37 strikeouts in 25 2/3 relief innings this year, and he should immediately reclaim the closing role for the White Sox, so fantasy managers need to get him back into their lineups right away. Kendall Graveman recorded two saves for the team over the weekend, and he'll move back to a high-leverage setup role. Engel is likely to fill a reserve role in Chicago's outfield. He's starting the game on Monday against the Minnesota Twins on the bench.

  • Dylan Floro Earns His Second Save Monday

Miami Marlins reliever Dylan Floro closed out Monday's 3-2 win over the Washington Nationals, recording his second save of the season. He pitched one inning, allowing one unearned run with no strikeouts or walks. Floro owns an ugly 4.95 ERA and 1.30 WHIP with nine strikeouts across 20 innings this season. However, he's improved as of late, pitching to a 2.70 ERA in his last seven outings. Floro's saves came on back-to-back days, so perhaps Don Mattingly is starting to find more trust in the right-hander. Tanner Scott still figures to be the closer, but the former Dodger might be a streaming option when the former isn't available.

  • Tyler Matzek Reinstated From Injured List

The Atlanta Braves reinstated reliever Tyler Matzek (shoulder) from the injured list on Monday. Matzek and outfielder Eddie Rosario were both reinstated from the injured list and should provide the National League East club with additional options in the bullpen and outfield respectively. Matzek has only thrown 10.2 innings this season, pitching to a 5.06 ERA and a 5.55 FIP, 10 strikeouts, and nine walks. However, he was much more effective in 2021, logging a 2.57 ERA and a 3.20 FIP in 63 innings while striking out 77 batters and allowing 37 walks. He's worth a look for fantasy managers in deeper leagues where holds are part of the scoring format.

  • Brooks Raley Reinstated From Restricted List

The Tampa Bay Rays reinstated left-hander Brooks Raley and right-hander Ryan Thompson from the restricted list on Monday and returned right-handers Phoenix Sanders and Javy Guerra to Triple-A Durham in corresponding moves. Right-hander Cristofer Ogando was optioned to Durham, and left-hander Josh Fleming has been recalled from Durham. Raley was unavailable to play in the five-game series in Toronto against the Blue Jays because he's unvaccinated against COVID-19, but he's rejoining the team for their series against the Boston Red Sox that begins on the Fourth of July. The 34-year-old southpaw has been great this year, posting a 2.22 ERA and 0.90 WHIP with four saves and 32 strikeouts in 24 1/3 relief innings.

  • Paul Sewald Notches Ninth Save

Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Paul Sewald only needed to throw 13 pitches during Sunday's outing against the Oakland Athletics. He got Vimael Machin to flyout, Sean Murphy to lineout, and he struck out Stephen Vogt to secure his ninth save of the season. The right-hander has secured all five of his save chances since June 23. The Mariners appear to be in good hands with Sewald as their closer. It's worth noting that Diego Castillo could steal some save opportunities from Sewald. Despite that, Sewald still gets enough work to warrant rostering in fantasy leagues where saves matter.

  • Raisel Iglesias Serving Suspension Sunday

Los Angeles Angels closer Raisel Iglesias had his suspension reduced to one game, and he'll serve it on Sunday against the Houston Astros. Iglesias was suspended for his outburst during the team's benches-clearing brawl against the Seattle Mariners last week, in which he got heated and threw sunflower seeds onto the field. The 32-year-old right-hander hasn't allowed a run since June 12 and has recorded saves in two of his last three appearances. On Saturday night, he tossed a scoreless inning while striking out two in a non-save situation in a 9-1 loss. If a save situation arises on Sunday, either Ryan Tepera or Aaron Loup are the best bets to work the ninth inning for the Halos with Iglesias serving his suspension.

  • Orioles Remain Confident In Jorge Lopez As Closer

Baltimore Orioles closer Jorge Lopez suffered his third blown save of the year on Friday as he allowed a two-run walk-off home run to Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton. After the game, Lopez expressed disappointment that he allowed the home run -- the first homer he'd allowed over 37 innings this year. However, Orioles manager Brandon Hyde stated that Lopez had nothing to be down about. Hyde praised the work Lopez had done as the team's primary closer this year and specifically said, "We get a save situation, he'll be in there." The 29-year-old veteran has 13 saves on the year to go along with a 1.22 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP. His closer job certainly doesn't appear to be in jeopardy at this point.

  • Jordan Hicks Activated, Matthew Liberatore Recalled

The St. Louis Cardinals activated right-hander Jordan Hicks (forearm) from the 15-day injured list on Saturday and recalled rookie left-hander Matthew Liberatore from Triple-A Memphis in a corresponding move. The team also optioned right-hander Jake Woodford to Memphis and designated right-hander Nick Wittgren for assignment. Hicks has been out since May and is likely to serve in a relief role now that he's healthy, limiting his fantasy appeal to much deeper leagues. Liberatore, the team's No. 3 prospect per MLB Pipeline, will make his fifth big-league start on Saturday against the Philadelphia Phillies. The 22-year-old lefty could stick in the rotation with Jack Flaherty and Steven Matz on the injured list. He's allowed eight earned runs on 19 hits while walking 10 and striking out 15 in 18 innings, and he'll need to show better control if he wants better results.

  • Emilio Pagan Taken Out Of Closer Role

The Minnesota Twins are pulling right-hander Emilio Pagan from the closer's role and will have him pitch in lower-leverage situations until he gets back on track. "Yeah, he's going to pitch earlier in the games and potentially when we don't have the lead and things like that," said manager Rocco Baldelli. Pagan has nine saves this year, but he's also sporting an ugly 5.26 ERA and 1.44 WHIP. The 31-year-old had a rough month of June, blowing three saves and allowing 11 earned runs on nine hits while walking four and striking out 12 in 8 2/3 innings to lose his job temporarily. Jhoan Duran picked up a save last Sunday and is in the driver's seat to take over closing duties moving forward, so he should become a priority addition for those seeking saves.

  • Aroldis Chapman Reinstated From Injured List

The New York Yankees reinstated relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman from the 15-day injured list on Friday and placed right-hander Miguel Castro on the paternity list in a corresponding move. Chapman was expected to come off the injured list on Friday for the start of this weekend's series against the Cleveland Guardians after making his final minor league rehab outing for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre earlier this week. The Yankees will probably ease the hard-throwing left-hander back into high-leverage situations, especially with how well Clay Holmes has performed in a closing role this year. Holmes has earned at least a partial role as the Yankees closer, but New York wants to give Chapman his chances as well.

  • Adam Cimber Converts Fourth Save

Toronto Blue Jays reliever Adam Cimber worked a perfect ninth inning on Thursday to close out the team's 4-1 win over the Rays to earn his fourth save of the season. The right-hander got a pair of groundouts and a strikeout on 10 pitches to end the contest with closer Jordan Romano getting the night off after working the past two nights. Cimber has found some fantasy value this season with a 7-2 record, 3.58 ERA, and a 1.04 WHIP with nine holds through 32 2/3 IP. He may run into a few more saves and wins the rest of the way and would likely be the closing handcuff if Romano were to ever miss any time.

  • Ryan Pressly Picks Up Save No. 17

Houston Astros closer Ryan Pressly picked up his 17th save of the season in the 2-1 win on Thursday in a makeup game against the New York Yankees. Pressly didn't allow a hit and didn't walk a batter while striking out two in his scoreless inning of work to shut things down. The 33-year-old right-hander has now recorded back-to-back saves, so there's a good chance he won't be available if a save situation arises in the first game of the weekend series against the Los Angeles Angels on Friday. Pressly imploded in a blown save and a loss last Thursday against the Yankees when he gave up four runs in just a third of an inning, but he's bounced back nicely with saves in his last three outings without allowing a single run while striking out five and walking none.

Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Trevor Richards (neck) has begun a rehab assignment at Triple-A Buffalo. The 29-year-old landed on the 15-day injured list due to a strained neck back on June 18. He's been having a rough year out of the pen, pitching to a 6.59 ERA and a 1.57 WHIP across 28.2 innings. He's been struggling mightily with his control, averaging 5.0 BB/9, which is way up from last year's 2.8 BB/9 average.

  • Brooks Raley Unavailable Against Toronto

The Tampa Bay Rays placed relievers Brooks Raley and Ryan Thompson on the restricted list on Thursday, and they will not be joining the team in Toronto for a five-game series this weekend due to Canada's COVID vaccination requirement. The Rays bullpen will be a bit short-handed this weekend against the Blue Jays. The left-handed Raley has been great for Tampa so far this year in 24 1/3 innings pitched, picking up four saves while allowing six earned runs on 14 hits while striking out 32 and walking only eight in 27 relief appearances. Thompson hasn't been nearly as good, posting a 5.33 ERA and 1.42 WHIP with 22 K's, three saves and 10 walks in 25 1/3 innings pitched.

  • Jeffrey Springs Won't Make Start Thursday

The Tampa Bay Rays placed left-hander Jeffrey Springs on the family medical emergency list on Thursday, which explains why he won't make the start against the Toronto Blue Jays as originally scheduled. Ryan Yarbrough has been called up from the minors as the likely bulk pitcher for Thursday's game, while Matt Wisler is listed as the opener for Tampa. Springs will be forced to miss three to seven days, but he could be an option to return as a starter for the Rays next week. Yarbrough has struggled in his time in the big leagues this year, going 0-3 with a 5.65 ERA and 1.53 WHIP while walking 10 and striking out 20 in 28 2/3 innings over seven appearances (six starts), so he won't be a recommended fantasy streamer.

  • Ryan Helsley Blows Save Chance On Wednesday

St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Ryan Helsley was charged with his third blown save and first loss of the year on Wednesday. He entered Wednesday's game against the Miami Marlins in the ninth inning with the Cardinals leading 3-2. He went on to give up a game-winning, two-run home run to Marlins outfielder Avisail Garcia. His final line: one inning, two hits, one walk, two earned runs and three strikeouts. He is now 6-for-9 on save chances this year, which isn't a great conversion rate, but he owns a stellar 0.88 ERA and 0.65 WHIP. He's been the team's primary closer lately and should remain in that role, but Giovanny Gallegos is still in the picture as well. Gallegos is 9-for-13 in save opportunities with his most recent blown save coming this past Saturday.

  • Will Smith Secures His Third Save On Wednesday

Atlanta Braves relief pitcher Will Smith struck out two over a scoreless inning to earn the save during Wednesday's 4-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. He entered the game in the ninth inning to protect a three-run lead. The 32-year-old threw 17 pitches, firing 13 for strikes to earn his third save of the season. Atlanta has had two saves chances in as many days since primary closer Kenley Jansen was placed on the 15-day injured list due to an irregular heartbeat. A.J. Minter got the first shot for a save chance on Tuesday, but the Braves turned to Smith on Wednesday. Smith has been solid this season, posting a 3.30 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, and 31 strikeouts over 30 innings in 2022. Fantasy managers should add both Smith and Minter in all league formats as the Braves will likely split save opportunities between the two relief pitchers while Jansen is sidelined.

Detroit Tigers relief pitcher Gregory Soto struck out one batter in a perfect inning to earn the save during Wednesday's 3-2 win over the San Francisco Giants. He entered the ninth inning to protect a one-run lead. The 27-year-old needed just 10 pitches to retire the Giants and earn his 15th save of the year. He has been solid as Detroit's primary closer, posting a 2.57 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, and 29 strikeouts over 28 innings in 2022. Fantasy managers should continue to roll with Soto in all league formats.

He retired each of the three batters he faced in the inning, recording two strikeouts along the way. The 32-year-old is now 7-for-9 in save opportunities this year. He's been pulling away as the team's favored closer lately, locking down five saves this month while his main competitor for the ninth, Diego Castillo, has just two saves in June. Sewald owns a stellar 2.60 ERA and 0.72 WHIP on the season and should be universally rostered at this point.

Hader came in to close things out with a two-run lead and did just that, delivering a 1-2-3 inning with three strikeouts. Hader has been everything fantasy managers have come to expect this season, converting all but one save opportunity with 41 strikeouts, six walks, and a 1.14 ERA in 23 2/3 innings pitched.

  • Clay Holmes Gets Save No. 13 Tuesday

New York Yankees relief pitcher Clay Holmes managed to pick up his 13th save of the season in Tuesday's 2-1 win over the Athletics despite odd circumstances. Holmes entered to pitch the ninth inning up 2-0. He struck the first two hitters out, but a runner then reached on catcher's interference and advanced to second on a stolen base. Holmes then allowed back-to-back singles, one of which brought an unearned run in, but he managed to stop things there with a groundout. Holmes has been fantastic for the Yankees this season, converting all but one save opportunity with a 9.59 K/9 rate, 1.26 BB/9 rate, and 0.50 ERA. Aroldis Chapman (Achilles) is expected to rejoin the team in a few weeks, but Holmes has pitched too well to be cast aside by fantasy managers, even when Chapman does return.

St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Ryan Helsley picked up his sixth save of the season in Tuesday's 5-3 win over the Marlins. Helsley came in to close things out with a two-run lead and delivered a 1-2-3 inning with three strikeouts. The 27-year-old has clearly been the team's best reliever this season, compiling a 3-0 record with two blown saves, five holds, a 12.74 K/9 rate, and a minuscule 0.30 ERA. Despite this, he has been on the back half of a closing timeshare with Giovanny Gallegos, who pitched the eighth inning in this game. This makes Helsley slightly less attractive in roto leagues, but he certainly does hold fantasy value in all leagues at this time.

  • Hunter Strickland Earns Fourth Save Of Season Tuesday

Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Hunter Strickland picked up his fourth save of the season in Tuesday's 5-3 win over the Cubs. Strickland came in to pitch the ninth inning and preserve a two-run lead. He got the first out on a strikeout, allowed a double, and then got the final two outs on a lineout and a flyout. The 33-year-old has seen the team's last two save opportunities and has not blown a save this season, although he does own an unsightly 4.91 ERA. The Reds have used a number of arms in save situations so far, and it looks like Strickland may be the man of the moment. Fantasy managers should still be wary of Strickland at this time given his overall poor performance.

Minter received the first save chance after primary closer Kenley Jansen landed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday due to an irregular heartbeat. Will Smith and Minter will continue to handle closing duties while Jansen is sidelined. Minter owns a 1.64 ERA, 0.79 WHIP, and 44:5 K: BB through 33 innings in 2022. Fantasy managers should add both Minter and Smith in all league formats as both should see save chances for the foreseeable future.

He is 11-for-14 in save chances with a 2.88 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, and 30:11 K: BB over 25 innings Rainey should be rostered in all league formats for fantasy managers searching for saves as the right-hander is the primary closer for the Nationals.

New York Yankees relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman (Achilles) struck out two, walked none and gave up no hits in a scoreless inning of work in his minor league rehab outing on Tuesday with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Chapman threw seven of his 13 pitches for strikes, and he's expected to be activated from the injured list now, most likely before Wednesday's game. There's a good chance the southpaw reliever won't pitch on Wednesday against the Oakland Athletics, but he should be ready to go again for Thursday's makeup game against the Houston Astros. The 34-year-old might not see all of the Yankees' save chances when he returns because of Clay Holmes' dominance in the role this year, but manager Aaron Boone wants to at least give Chapman a share of the duties.

Hendriks felt good after his bullpen session on Monday and will throw a simulated game in San Francisco on Friday. The 33-year-old right-handed went on the injured list two weeks ago, but fantasy managers could have him back by next week. Hendriks should be rostered in all league's as the Pale Hose's closer when healthy, and he has 16 saves, a 2.81 ERA and 37 punch-outs in 25 2/3 innings pitched this year. Kendall Graveman should continue to work the ninth inning for the White Sox until Hendriks is deemed ready to return.

  • David Bednar Unavailable Tuesday Due To Back Issue

Pittsburgh Pirates manager Derek Shelton said that closer David Bednar (back) has been dealing with a lower-back issue and won't be available to pitch on Tuesday against the Washington Nationals. The Pirates are trying to avoid an injured list stint for Bednar, so it remains to be seen if he'll miss any more time. The 27-year-old has been great for the Bucs this year (1.78 ERA, 11 saves and 49 K's in 35 1/3 innings), but two of his three blown saves on the season have come in his last three appearances, and the back issue may be to blame. Fantasy managers in need of saves will want to look to either Wil Crowe or Chris Stratton. It's unclear who the favorite for saves in Pittsburgh would be if Bednar goes on the injured list, and it's possible Crowe and Stratton could share closing duties.

  • Raisel Iglesias Notches 14th Save Of Season Monday

Los Angeles Angels closer Raisel Iglesias picked up his 14th save of the season in Monday's 4-3 win over the White Sox. Iglesias entered the game to pitch the ninth inning with a one-run lead and delivered a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout. It was announced earlier Monday that he was suspended for two games for his actions during a bench-clearing brawl with the Seattle Mariners on Sunday. However, the 32-year-old closer seems to have appealed the suspension, so he should be able to pitch in the interim. Iglesias has been a solid fantasy option once again this season and has a 3.76 ERA, 12.99 K/9 rate, and 1.37 BB/9 rate with just two blown saves. He should remain in fantasy managers' lineups until his suspension gets resolved or served.

  • Kyle Finnegan Earns First Save Of Season Monday

Finnegan entered the game to pitch the ninth inning with a one-run lead. He got the first out on a pop-out, allowed a double, but got the next two hitters out on fly-outs to end the game. The 30-year-old hasn't pitched particularly well this season with a 4.03 ERA over 29 innings pitched. More importantly, Tanner Rainey has been the clear closing option for the Nationals this season, but he had pitched in two of the team's last three games, so he was likely just receiving a rest day.

Los Angeles Angels right-hander Andrew Wantz was suspended for three games for throwing at Seattle Mariners outfielder Jesse Winker while warnings were in place on Sunday. Wantz hit Winker on the hip after earlier throwing a pitch near the head of Julio Rodriguez. The Angels were reportedly unhappy about a pitch thrown near the head of Mike Trout earlier in the series and Wantz retaliated on Sunday. Wantz has not appealed the suspension and will begin to serve it on Monday night as his teammates take on the Chicago White Sox at home. Wantz has a 3.18 across 12 appearances for Los Angeles in 2022.

The 32-year-old closer seems to have appealed the suspension, so he will presumably be out there for potential save opportunities as the Angels open up a home series against the Chicago White Sox on Monday. Setup man Ryan Tepera also received a three-game suspension, meaning it could be some combination of lefty Aaron Loup and/or right-hander Archie Bradley closing out games when the Iglesias and Tepera suspensions are eventually served.

Chapman has two strikeouts in two scoreless innings in his two rehab outings for Double-A Somerset so far, and his return is right around the corner. Even though Clay Holmes has been much better in a closing role for the Yanks in the ninth inning, Chapman is expected to return as the team's primary closer once he comes off the injured list. Still, Holmes will pitch in high-leverage situations and should remain rostered in fantasy leagues. The 34-year-old Chapman obviously will be a must-start as the closer for the best team in baseball.

  • Sergio Romo Joins Blue Jays

The Toronto Blue Jays signed free-agent relief pitcher Sergio Romo to an undisclosed major league contract on Monday, according to league sources. Romo was granted his release by the Seattle Mariners last week after allowing 13 earned runs on 18 hits (six home runs allowed) while walking four and striking out 11 in 14 1/3 innings over 17 relief appearances for the Mariners. The 39-year-old veteran is nearing the end of his career and is unlikely to have much more than a low-leverage role out of Toronto's bullpen if he sticks in the majors the rest of this year.

  • Garrett Whitlock Plays Catch

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Garrett Whitlock (hip) played catch on Saturday, which is a step in the right direction as he works his way back from hip inflammation. "We have to be careful not to push him," manager Alex Cora said. Whitlock also threw a simulated game last Tuesday, but the Red Sox don't plan on activating him from the injured list for the start of their series against the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday. The 26-year-old will take it slow after not feeling that great last week. When he's ready, Whitlock is fully expected to return to the starting rotation, as he was sporting a 3.51 ERA and 1.13 WHIP with 49 strikeouts and 11 walks in 48 2/3 innings over his 13 outings (nine starts) before his injury.

  • Aroldis Chapman Expected Back This Week

New York Yankees relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman (Achilles) threw a hitless inning with one strikeout in his second minor league rehab appearance for Double-A Somerset on Sunday, and the Yankees expect to activate Chapman from the injured list this week. The hard-throwing left-hander last pitched in the majors on May 22, but skipper Aaron Boone said over the weekend that Chapman will return to ninth-inning duties. The 34-year-old will likely rejoin the team on Monday against the Oakland Athletics, and fantasy managers will need to get him back into their lineups immediately. Clay Holmes has been much better as the Yankees closer this year, but Chapman will still have plenty of value if he's closing games for the best team in baseball. Chapman's return is bad news for Holmes, but he needs to remain rostered in all leagues.

  • Brooks Raley Records Fourth Save

Tampa Bay Rays relief pitcher Brooks Raley fired a scoreless ninth inning during Sunday's victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. He retired the first two batters before issuing a two out walk to Jack Suwinski. The 33-year-old recorded the next out and picked up his fourth save of the season. The Rays are expected to continue going closer by committee, which means Raley will be in the mix for saves. However, it's uncertain when his chances will come, so it's tough to count on him as a fantasy option.

  • Lou Trivino Spins Scoreless Ninth Inning

Oakland Athletics relief pitcher Lou Trivino was asked to take the ball in the ninth inning during Sunday's game against the Kansas City Royals. Trivino tossed a scoreless ninth inning to help hold a two-run lead and record his fourth save of the season. The 30-year-old gave up a pair of hits, but was able to escape. He has struggled throughout a majority of the season, but should be asked to take on a bigger role with Dany Jimenez (shoulder) sidelined. There's not a ton of value in Trivino, but he could be worth a look for fantasy managers seeking closer help.

  • Tanner Rainey Fires Scoreless Ninth Inning

Washington Nationals relief pitcher Tanner Rainey tossed a scoreless ninth inning during Sunday's victory over the Texas Rangers. The 29-year-old issued a walk to Josh Smith, but got Marcus Semien to ground out to end the game. This marked his 10th save of the season in 13 opportunities. Rainey has been fairly reliable this season, but the Nationals don't get many save opportunities these days. Possibly. Rainey gets moved at the trade deadline to a more competitive team.

  • Kendall Graveman Records Third Save

Chicago White Sox relief pitcher Kendall Graveman was able to escape during Sunday's game against the Baltimore Orioles. First baseman Jose Abreu made two errors, which hurt, but luckily the White Sox had a three-run lead. Graveman was able to escape with his third save of the season. This was his first save since Liam Hendriks (forearm) went on the injured list. Fantasy managers should be able to trust Graveman in the closer role while Hendriks is sidelined.

  • Joe Smith Placed On 15-Day Injured List

The Minnesota Twins placed relief pitcher Joe Smith (neck) on the 15-day injured list with upper trapezius tightness on Sunday. The move is retroactive to June 24. He's made 28 appearances and he's racked up 14 holds while pitching to a 2.78 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP. However, his 4.63 xERA suggests that he's been fortunate thus far. He's also currently sporting a career-low 13.3% strikeout rate, which ranks in the bottom 6% of the league.

  • Seranthony Dominguez Notches Second Save

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Seranthony Dominguez threw a perfect inning to earn the save in Saturday's 4-2 win over the Padres. He entered Saturday's game to protect a two-run lead. The right-hander threw a scoreless inning to earn his second save of the season. Dominguez is 2-for-3 in save chances with a 1.63 ERA, 0.83 WHIP, and a 35:7 K: BB across 27 2/3 innings in 2022. The Phillies continue to rotate save opportunities with Brad Hand and Dominguez now that Corey Knebel was removed from the closer role. Fantasy managers should continue to roll with Dominguez in all league formats.

  • Tanner Houck Works Clean Ninth For Save

Boston Red Sox reliever Tanner Houck worked a perfect ninth inning to preserve the team's 4-2 win over the Guardians on Saturday. It was the sixth save in as many tries this season as he needed just seven pitches to retire the bottom-third of the Guardians lineup. Houck has been a breath of fresh air to the struggling Red Sox bullpen as he's compiled a 3.03 ERA with 30 K through 29 2/3 IP as a reliever this season. He won't be able to travel for the club's upcoming series versus the Blue Jays in Toronto, but he still has a pretty strong hold on the closing job in Beantown.

  • David Bednar Blows Save Saturday

Pittsburgh Pirates right-handed pitcher David Bednar blew the save and took the loss on Saturday against the Tampa Bay Rays. Bednar was looking good as usual to begin the ninth, inducing a groundout for the first out followed by strike out to put the Pirates one out away from victory. Unfortunately, it all unraveled from there. Bednar issued two walks and two singles to the Rays, blowing his third save of the season. Even with the bad outing, the 27-year-old has been tremendous all season, posting a 1.78 ERA and 0.88 WHIP while converting 11 of his 14 save opportunities. The Pirates could look to trade Bednar at the trade deadline, and they could certainly get a haul for him, especially considering he is arbitration-eligible for the next 4 seasons. Unfortunately for fantasy managers, this could actually tank his value as he may not be the closer depending on which team he is traded to.

It was a nice bounce back for the Astros closer, who had a disastrous outing just two days ago in which he gave up four runs and blew the save against this same Yankees team. Although he has had some blow-ups and his underlying numbers are significantly worse this season, he has still been solid overall. That along with having manager Dusty Baker's full trust keeps Pressly near the top of the closer rankings.

Boone added that Loaisiga will need at least a few more bullpen sessions as well as some live batting practice sessions prior to being sent on a minor league rehab assignment. Loaisiga has been on the injured list for about a month now due to right shoulder inflammation. He has a 7.02 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP across 16.2 innings this season, but he was one of the team's top relievers in 2021 when he compiled 18 holds and five saves to go along with a 2.17 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP.

Then he will join Triple-A Durham. Fairbanks is working his way back from a right lat muscle tear that he suffered during spring training. He was a heavily utilized arm out of the pen for the Rays last year, appearing in 47 games and racking up 14 holds and five saves while pitching to a 3.59 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP.

  • Genesis Cabrera Goes On Injured List

The St. Louis Cardinals placed left-hander Genesis Cabrera (undisclosed) on the injured list on Saturday and recalled right-hander Jake Woodford from Triple-A Memphis in a corresponding move. There was no reason given for Cabrera's injured list placement, so he's likely on the COVID-19 IL. The 25-year-old's timetable will depend on whether he tested positive for the virus and how long until he can clear the league's protocols. With Cabrera out, Zach Thompson should see more high-leverage situations ahead of co-closers Ryan Helsley and Giovanny Gallegos. Cabrera has only one save this year, but he's been useful with a 2.27 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, 26 strikeouts and 12 walks in his 31 2/3 relief innings.

Things haven't gone great for the hard-throwing right-hander in his first year as the Dodgers closer, as he has a 4.30 ERA in 23 innings pitched, but he's the closer on one of the best teams in baseball. The 34-year-old has also only blown one save this year and has struck out 35 hitters in his 23 innings of work for LA.

  • Aroldis Chapman Set For Another Rehab Outing Sunday

New York Yankees relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman (Achilles) will make another minor league rehab appearance with Double-A Somerset on Sunday, and then he could be activated from the injured list, according to skipper Aaron Boone. When Chapman is activated, he will return to the ninth inning, which is bad news for those that have Clay Holmes, who has been lights-out as the Yankees closer this year. Still, we'd be surprised if Holmes is completely out of the picture for saves in the Bronx given how well he's pitched so far in 2022. Chapman gave up a hit and struck out one for Somerset in his first rehab outing on Friday, and he's closed out nine games for the Yanks this year while sporting a 3.86 ERA and 1.64 WHIP with 15 K's in 14 innings of work.

  • Matt Bush Starting Against Nationals

Texas Rangers right-hander Matt Bush will serve as the team's opener on Saturday against the Washington Nationals. Bush pitched on Friday in the series opener against the Nats, going a scoreless frame with two strikeouts, so he's unlikely to go very long in his start Saturday. Overall this year, the former No. 1 overall pick in 2004 has a 4.05 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP while striking out 36 and walking seven in 26 2/3 innings over 30 outings (three starts). In all three of Bush's starts, he's only gone one inning, so fantasy managers shouldn't be looking to him as a streaming option on Saturday.

  • Jeffrey Springs Strikes Out Nine Friday

Tampa Bay Rays left-hander Jeffrey Springs struck out a season-high nine hitters in a no-decision against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night. All three of the earned runs he allowed came on three solo home runs, and he walked none in his six innings of work. The long ball has been a bit of an issue for Springs, but otherwise he's been solid for fantasy managers, posting a 2.25 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP with a 27% strikeout rate and a career-low 5.6% walk rate in 60 innings over 18 appearances (10 starts). He also has a career-low .214 batting average against and a solid 3.34 FIP. Springs currently has a career-low .265 batting average on balls in play, so he probably won't be this good all year, but he's worth rostering in most mixed leagues.

  • Aroldis Chapman Throws A Scoreless Inning In Rehab Outing

New York Yankees relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman (Achilles) made his first rehab appearance at Double-A Somerset on Friday. He pitched a scoreless seventh inning in the outing, allowing one hit and no walks while striking out one. He topped out at 99 mph on the radar gun in the game. Chapman, who has been out since late May with an Achilles injury, is expected to spend at least a few more days on his rehab assignment. The hope is that he will be back with the Yankees by the end of the month. Prior to the injury, he had gone 9-for-9 in save opportunities while pitching to a 3.86 ERA and a 1.64 WHIP. Yankees manager Aaron Boone recently stated that he expects Chapman to return to closing duties upon his activation, despite how effective Clay Holmes has been in the ninth inning with Chapman out.

  • Aroldis Chapman Starts Rehab Assignment Friday

New York Yankees relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman (Achilles) is beginning his minor league rehab assignment with Double-A Somerset on Friday. Chapman has been on the injured list for a month, but he should only require a short rehab assignment and could be activated to rejoin New York's bullpen at some point early next week. With how well Clay Holmes has done in the ninth inning for the Bombers this year, it's entirely plausible that the 34-year-old left-hander will share closing duties with Holmes once he returns to the Bronx. Holmes has been lights-out this year, while Chapman is 0-2 with a 3.86 ERA, 1.64 WHIP, nine saves, 15 strikeouts and 10 walks in 14 innings pitched. Initially, Hendriks had told reporters that July 1 was his target for a return, but now he believes there's a chance he could be back when first eligible on June 27. We should have a more clear idea on his return timeline in the coming days as he's set for bullpen and flat ground sessions soon. The 29-year-old entered the frame with runners on first and second, but he was able to strike out both Tim Anderson and Andrew Vaughn on a combined seven pitches to end the contest. It was Lopez's 12th save of the campaign as he's putting together a superb season with a microscopic 0.77 ERA and 0.83 WHIP with 36 punchouts through 35 IP. He's proved to be one of the few bright spots for the O's pitching staff this season, and will keep a stranglehold on the ninth inning job as long as he stays healthy.

  • Ryan Pressly Implodes In Blown-Save Opportunity

Houston Astros reliever Ryan Pressly had a rough day at the office by blowing his third save of the season in the club's 7-6 loss to the Yankees on Thursday. The right-hander was handed a three-run lead to enter the ninth, but he promptly allowed two walks and then a homer to Aaron Hicks to tie the game before even recording an out. He would go on to allow two more singles, but was lifted in favor of Ryne Stanek who ultimately gave up the game-winning hit to Aaron Judge. Pressly now owns an underwhelming 4.26 ERA and 1.37 WHIP with a 15/8 K/BB through 19 IP. • A.J. Puk Charged With The Blown Save On Thursday

Oakland Athletics left-hander A.J. Puk allowed two inherited runners to score on two walks and two wild pitches, taking a blown save in Thursday's 2-1 loss to the Seattle Mariners. After starter Frankie Montas tossed a gem by throwing eight scoreless innings, Oakland's bullpen imploded in Thursday's loss. Zach Jackson entered the ninth inning to protect a one-run lead but allowed two runs on two walks and one strikeout in two-thirds of an inning before being pulled for Puk. With two outs, Puk entered the game in the ninth frame. The 27-year-old was shaky and surrendered two walks and threw two wild pitches, blowing the save on Thursday. Jackson was charged with the loss, but both pitchers could not close the game out. Dany Jimenez (shoulder) is on the injured list. Puk or Jackson will look to rebound in their next save opportunity. Fantasy managers searching for saves should continue to hang onto Puk, as he is still the favorite to close games despite Thursday's implosion. Jackson is an option in deeper leagues.

He owns a 2.81 ERA, 0.78 WHIP, and 25:7 K: BB across 24 2/3 innings in 2022. Seattle continues to use a committee as Sewald shares save changes with Diego Castillo and recently activated Ken Giles. Holmes had blown his last save opportunity on Monday, so it was nice to see him bounce back with a scoreless ninth. Aroldis Chapman (Achilles) appears to be about a week or two away from returning to the team. He'll complicate the ninth inning situation once he's back, but Holmes has done little to lose trust from the team. He has a 0.53 ERA and a 0.71 WHIP on the year. They pitched two innings each on Tuesday, so the team likely wanted to hold them out of action for Wednesday's game. Cabrera has had a nice season, pitching to a 2.27 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP while racking up 10 holds. The Rays have always had an unclear approach to closing games, and that is even more true with Andrew Kittredge (elbow) on the 60-day injured list. Poche may have to contend with Jason Adam (who pitched the eighth inning) and Brooks Raley (who pitched in the seventh inning) for save opportunities, but he has pitched well overall, compiling a 2.01 ERA with only one blown save in 22 1/3 innings pitched. The 34-year-old has been sidelined since May 22. He has been throwing bullpen sessions and reportedly looked healthy. Before landing on the injured list, the southpaw posted a 3.86 ERA, 1.64 WHIP with nine saves, and a 15:10 K: BB across 14 innings. Barring any setbacks, Chapman should return to action soon but will share ninth-inning duties with Clay Holmes, who has been electric this season. Holmes is a 4-0 with 11 saves while posting a 0.55 ERA, 0.73 WHIP, and a 34:4 K: BB over 31 games in 2022.

  • No Structural Damage For Dany Jimenez

Oakland Athletics skipper Mark Kotsay said that an MRI exam showed no structural damage for rookie relief pitcher Dany Jimenez (shoulder), but the team will be cautious and make sure he's 100% before returning to action. The A's will now go with matchups to close out games, and relievers A.J. Puk and Zach Jackson were mentioned by Kotsay as options to fill Jimenez's closer role while he's out. Jimenez was placed on the injured list on Tuesday, but he needs to remain stashed in all fantasy leagues, as he's saved 11 of his 13 chances in 2022. Domingo Acevedo is another option that could see a save chance here or there for the A's while Jimenez is out.

  • Taylor Rogers Earns 21st Save Of Season Monday

San Diego Padres closer Taylor Rogers notched his 21st save of the season in Monday's 4-1 win over the Diamondbacks. Rogers came into the ninth inning to preserve a three-run lead and delivered a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts. The 31-year-old has been fantastic this season, converting all but three save opportunities with a 2.89 ERA, 31 strikeouts, and six walks in 28 innings pitched. He has been a huge fantasy asset this season and should continue to be so.

  • Tanner Houck Earns Fifth Save Of Season Monday

Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Tanner Houck picked up his fifth save of the season in Monday's 5-2 win over the Tigers. Houck entered the game to pitch the ninth inning with a three-run lead. He struck the first hitter out, allowed a single, and got the final two outs on a lineout and a flyout. The 25-year-old appears to have taken the closer's role in Boston, as he has earned all of his saves in his last five appearances. Houck is currently rostered in 71 percent of leagues, but fantasy managers in roto leagues at least should check to see if he happens to still be available in their leagues.

  • Josh Hader Earns Save 20 In Monday's Return

Milwaukee Brewers closer Josh Hader picked up right where he left off in his return from the restricted list Monday, picking up his 20th save of the season in a 2-0 win over the Cardinals. Hader entered the game in the ninth inning to protect a two-run lead. He allowed a leadoff single to Brendan Donovan, who was caught trying to steal second. Hader then got the final two outs on a strikeout and ground out. Hader has performed exactly as fantasy managers had hoped for, converting all but one save opportunity this season with a 0.87 ERA and a 14.81 K/9 rate.

  • Joe Kelly Earns Shaky First Save Of Season Monday

Chicago White Sox relief pitcher Joe Kelly picked up his first save of the season in Monday's 8-7 win over the Blue Jays. Kelly came in to pitch the ninth inning up by three. He struck the first hitter out, but then allowed a single and a two-run home run before getting the final two outs on ground outs. It was the White Sox's first save opportunity since closer Liam Hendriks (forearm) was placed on the injured list, and it is interesting that Kendall Graveman pitched the eighth inning. Despite Kelly getting the first crack, Graveman appears to be the short-term arm to roster for fantasy managers, as his 2.43 ERA and history of closer experience seems to outweigh Kelly's 9.39 ERA.

  • Clay Holmes Charged With Blown Save Monday

New York Yankees relief pitcher Clay Holmes was charged with his first blown save of the season in Monday's 4-2 win over the Rays. Holmes entered to pitch the eighth inning up by two with one out and a runner on first. He allowed a double, an RBI groundout, an RBI single to tie the game, a walk, and finally got the third out on a strikeout. The fact that Holmes managed to make it into late June without a blown save is a testament to how well we has pitched, as he has 11 saves and a 0.55 ERA over 32 2/3 innings pitched. Holmes will still likely hold fantasy value even when Aroldis Chapman (Achilles) eventually returns.
