Dallas Cowboys 38, Seattle Seahawks 17
The Cowboys finally appear to be the offensive machine that I predicted they would be and they owe it all to Miles Austin (something no one predicted). I believed the Cowboys' offense would be efficient, with a strong running attack and a passing game where Tony Romo would simply pick apart defenses based on the coverages, not on the premise of getting the ball to any specific player. Over the past few weeks, Romo has been able to go deep, find short receivers when the defenses allow, and hit the open man over the middle. Against the Seahawks, Romo completed passes to 10 different players, including three TD, and did not throw an interception for the third straight game. Instead of worrying about forcing the ball to a particular player, Romo is able to sit comfortably in the pocket (with good protection as of late) and find the open receiver.
Miles Austin's emergence, and speed, has allowed the other receivers room to roam and get open. It should be noted that Austin is a legitimate threat and not just an average receiver on a good run. He runs good routes, has strong hands, and has an uncanny ability to make plays after the catch. Marion Barber found the endzone and received 14 carries to Felix Jones' 8. Jones looked explosive as usual but his fantasy value will be limited as long as Barber is healthy, or close to it. Jason Witten had another quiet game as defenses continue to focus their attention on preventing the pro bowl tight end from beating them. Roy Williams continues to be inconsistent, however. Dallas' defense pressured Matt Hasselbeck all day and Demarcus Ware recorded a sack for his third straight game, giving him 5 on the season.
As previously mentioned, Matt Hasselbeck faced pressure all day on his way to a 249 yard, 2 TD performance. Hasselbeck looked good but was not able to make enough plays to keep pace with the Cowboys' offense. Nate Burleson posted another solid game with 89 yards on 6 catches. T.J. Houshmandzadeh was visibly frustrated on the sidelines as the Seahawks have struggled to get him the ball yet again. Julius Jones ran hard but running lanes were hard to come by as the Dallas defense dominated the line of scrimmage most of the day. Justin Forsett had another quiet game as he had 1 carry and 1 catch, but fantasy owners should note that the Seahawks released Edgerrin James following Sunday's loss. The Seatlle defense looked porous all day as Romo and friends had their way. Part of Seattle's defensive struggles can be attributed to some key injuries, but nonetheless the reason for the struggles is irrelevant for fantasy purposes, as the bottom line is the defense is not very good.
